    Root Collar Excavation

I swapper her out for a Miho that has much better root structure. Problem solved!

Would you say definitively that this is a grafted tree? Sent from my 0PJA2 using Tapatalk

    Root Collar Excavation

The grafting doesn't bother me, if that's the case. I'm just worried that the first buttress root I uncovered does a hard 180 and lays back against this trunk bulge. Looks like it could girdle the tree down the road. Wondering if I should cut my losses and try to exchange before planting. I got...

    Root Collar Excavation

Hi guys, I'm curious whether fruit trees have any differences in root collar / flare excavation, compared to shade trees. I just picked up a Seto Satsuma Orange yesterday. I'm not sure what the likelihood of it being a clone is; or if the changes anything compared to a non-clone. I should have...

    Root Collar Excavation

Okay, I went a little deeper this morning using compressed air to assist. It looks like I finally found some buttress roots! I'm hoping that the light "dings" I put in the roots aren't too bad. There were definitely some smaller roots circling the crown that could have girdled it later in life...

    Root Collar Excavation

I found the flare a couple inches down. Planting height looks good. There is definitely some confusion in these roots. I'm going to read through that material before I go further. The root on the left takes a hard right turn and goes behind the tree (not down). These aren't the buttress roots...

Are they just a result of being container grown? Do you know of any write ups on that type of work? I don't want to cause excessive damage.

    Root Collar Excavation

Hi guys, I just planted a Monterrey Oak and it doesn't have much visible root flare. It was in a 30gal container and is maybe 9 ft tall. I would have already excavated, but there is a fairly dense mesh of fine roots all the way up to the soil surface. Should that be excavated away, or left...
