    This is the Akimbo

You could certainly find a shackle that fits, but it would prevent the Akimbo from opening. If you look close at a picture of it in the open position you can see that the hole passes over the opposite side spine piece.

    DIY Epple hook

a piece of aluminum that size should cost less than $20. i had a scrap left over from making akimbo parts. you could get it fo even cheaper if you bought a scrap from a machine shop.

    DIY Epple hook

i made this one out of 1/2" aluminum quite a while ago. it was very easy to cut out with a bandsaw and i used a router to clean up the edges. i just traced the profile of the dmm hook off a picture on the net.

    Tips and Tricks

How did you get it to fit so snug on the boot? Did you tie it in place or just worked it on?

I had to stop working on it for a bit due to my printer nozzles wearing out on me

    retracting reels

This was my 3D print mock up for a lanyard reel. It would feed the rope though and use a chainsaw pull cord mechanism. Picture pulling the pull cord and it moves that much rope through the device and spits it out into a bag or something. This makes the rope capacity effectively infinite.

I love this idea. I too have a pantin that I stripped and use as my knee ascender. I stitched a small loop on the bottom slot so I can attach a carabiner to it. I know for sure that the king duck doesn’t work. I tried it and it doesn’t consistently bite on a rope under tension, so if your...

    This is the Akimbo

True, but RE also has to think about their foreign distributors who would get left out. Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly and that bridge never needs crossing

I have a feeling that is what will happen if the ce certification process gets bogged down. The testing required for the us market is much simpler. Ideally both happen at the same time so that those outside the us don't get left out and best to have the Akimbo pass both as is rather than have to...

Nate is trying to be conservative with the timeline. To the best of my knowledge RE is still on track for spring/summer release. Nothing has changed since tcia Ohio. The big variable that prevents us from having a solid release date is the certification process. That is outside our control and...

I am removing the SAKA from the market.

i played around with one of those key chain recoil gizmos for a bit. it worked ok, spring wasn't strong enough and i couldn't find one with a long enough string or strong enough casing to attach to. they have one at my local hardware that is spooled with Kevlar string, so string strength isn't...

petzl's patent specifies a button positioned at the axle of the pulley sheave. they are very good at writing the broadest possible claims in their patents.

that really sucks! I've had gear disappear on me only to pop up in the stupidest of places more times than i care to admit. i hope you do find it.

the hype machine most certain got out of hand at some point. im hoping it does die down so that people can evaluate the Akimbo on its merits when it does hit the market.

i can only really speak for myself and my (relatively limited) experience with product development a la the Akimbo. i didn't start off with the goal of developing a commercial product at all, i was more or less indulging in my hobby of making things and experimenting with the tools i use at...

I will be having RE set aside a portion of the first batch for me and I will offer them to all of the $100 donors as promised.

yes they have had it for a year. we waited several months to get as much feedback from the units i sent out as possible. that was invaluable as some design flaws came to light rather quickly. a lot of time was spent waiting in line for prior RE projects to finish and then they also lost time...
