wouldn't say "critical" but imperative to keep it clean and loose. once had debris seize up the top widget and the whole device became unusable until I deep scrubbed with toothbrush and mineral spirits.
I have the "compact bulldog bone" specifically. it is not adjustable. It is truly ole reliable. It is a workhorse. It's a diesel engine. It will work every time the other device does not.
It gets used daily m-f for the past 5+ years and no difference in function, at all. there is some wear...
just saw the reflex is "in stock" at my favorite domestic vendor. Hasn't been available to buy in the US previously unless you do a "preorder". I would have bought one. but been watching folks demonstrate slippage after 6 months. glad I didn't buy it. Now seeing reports of the blackbird wearing...

morning day two 64' english walnut removal growing out over neighbors garage. rigging point over the breezeway. chain link fence inside tree. memorable largish 20" branch slow swing over the home (lowest stub). lots of roping. spurs.technical-thoughtful. such a fun job. got the adrenaline too...
was reminded indirectly that I had forgotten a nice technique for self tending ddrt with nothing more than an inline clove hitch. I just always chose srt vs hip thrusting ascents.
(ffwd to 6:20)
but it got me wondering why I am not using my tail as a secondary climbing system? Does anyone do...
in this configuration having weight on both sides of the friction somehow reduces the twisting. whereas a climber descending with figure8 chest level will send out unweighted slack into a pile of knots.
it twists. but it really doesn't though. doesn't seem to on the ground, but tidy crew so maybe. i think friction above and not at the end weight of the piece keeps the rope from rolling instead of unweighted slack squirting out like spaghetti
walking this through: if there is a lot of slack and then the right gyrations, the wrap could reform into a girth hitch and lock the entire thing up. hmm. in your experience and what you were taught, does this actually happen, is it just theoretical or at what frequency? in the configuration in...
there's things you can do with a figure8 besides rappelling off the spar rigging rope (which was the only time I saw another climber using one). It can be used for srt as a redirect or as a "soft 8" style canopy anchor. I guess folks commonly do light rigging off harness in place of s munter...
