    Experience or Skill?

That’s a valid observation. I’m still asking for perspectives for skill vs experience. Care to share one?

    Experience or Skill?

I’m thinking compare and contrast more than separating.

    Experience or Skill?

Please elaborate. I think knowledge comes from learning. Learning involves instruction, exposure, and research- someone giving you information and/or going after it on your own. While experience accumulates by doing work over time, skill develops by applying knowledge to adjust what you do...

    Experience or Skill?

Thanks for the reply! This does happen. We all see it. The yellow pages (or modern equivalent) regularly house advertisements for tree services who have “25 years experience,” but have developed little skill in that time. They learned some basics in the first few years, but are still doing...

    Experience or Skill?

Please share your opinions on the difference between these descriptions when it comes to tree work. I guess that’s not fair since there is a large array of facets to the industry: climbing, PHC, rigging, chainsaw use, etc. So please pick an area and let us know your take on how they overlap or...

    Climber vs. Lift

The reality is you use the right tool for the job if you want to be productive. Over long hauls, the lift doesn’t get tired. Also, a “best climber” has positioning experience that only comes from climbing. So a climber who has never been in a lift says “this is cool” when they finally get into a...

Pull Rope Height - what is optimal?

It's been a snowy day, so I thought I would write this problem up. WARNING!! There's lots of math. The result surprised me a little. You can get 80% of the torque possible by pulling at 27 degrees. For a 100 ft rope, this translates to a height of 45 ft. Go figure...

Big Battery saws, Greenworks 82v or Ego 56v?

It’s supposed to be equivalent to a 271. I’m not sure it will match up to an MS 250. With two batteries and a charger, the $1700 price above is accurate. The saw alone is $800. For that price, I expected 261-like performance. Instead, it’s noticeably weaker, heavier, and not well built. It’s...

Big Battery saws, Greenworks 82v or Ego 56v?

Don’t know if you’ve seen this, but Project Farm on YouTube has a good review for battery saws. We own the Stihl 220 MSA and 300 MSA saws. The 220 is a gem, but in my opinion, the 300 is the biggest saw purchase disappointment we’ve ever made. Both the Greenworks and Ego are all plastic...

Pull Rope Height - what is optimal?

Yes. It also puts one in the swat zone. The math is just algebra and trig. It says to go as far away as you can and high as is safe to get the most torque out of your pull. Most people can’t pull more than 150 pounds, so I’m assuming your scenario involves two people pulling? Adding the...

Physics Question: Basal vs Canopy Anchor Forces

On a straight up tree, the pull is no different. For a tree that is forward leaning with the pull, you do get a little more help from the downward component on the stem due to the basal tie. You also get more bending on the stem, so increased barber chair potential. On a back leaner, the basal...

    Husqvarna 550xp?

With the newer synthetic mix oils, I’ve seen it take up to 5 tanks fora saw to break in properly. I’m on my third tank with a 562, and it gets better with each tank.

    Stihl MSA 220T C-O or MSA 300

I replied to Donny in a separate message, but thought you folks would need to hear this as well. We have about 100 hrs on an MSA 300. It’s probably our biggest regret as far as saw purchases go. For $1300 (saw & 500AP batt, already had a charger) we expected “WOW” performance and utility...

    Which rope for zigzag?

I do this above my mechanicals on long descents. It saves a lot of wear on the device. I don't use that carabiner, it's just what I grabbed to snap the pic.

Insurance Rates Increasing Last Few Years...?

We saw a 15% increase! Never so much as dented a gutter for 25 years I think the hacks have pushed the rates up along with corporate greed. I’m bidding work way higher than ever before. Sad for everyone.
