Join Craig's Tree Service of Hendersonville NC as an Experienced Tree Climber

I can assure you these guys are the real deal. Great people, equipment, and work. I’m sure most (if not all) of these folks will be at Arborfest in Asheville this weekend. Hit them up! They’re a great outfit!

    Buckeye hinging

I don’t recall dealing with a frozen buckeye, but I felled around 20 on my property a couple of years ago and they hinged well. Thickening the hinge is probably unnecessary. When you do that, a lot of your effort goes into bending the tree. I bet you’ll be fine setting the hinge at 10% and...

    Battery ground saws

I’ve shared my dislike for the overpriced STIHL 300 here on the TB before. However, the more I run the 220 rear handle, the more I like it as a brush and chipper saw. My son likes the 220T, but admits it is heavy and awkward. I’ve heard great things about all the Milwaukee saws, but have yet...

    Kubota SCL1000

I have around 100 hours operating one of these. They are stout for their size, but riddled with computer problems. Also, grapple flow seems to be all or nothing, so it’s hard to finesse that control without powering down. I still think it’s a good machine, but I wouldn’t get one without a...

How to Get Power from a Pulley

Another aspect to consider is the definition of a vector: A quantity with magnitude and direction. Force is a vector quantity. Pulling a rope around a pulley doesn’t change the magnitude, but it does alter the direction. If the change in direction is 180 degrees, you go from +1 to -1 for the...

    Chainsaw Shopping

It’s not lightweight, and it’s extremely unbalanced. However, I only use that saw for bucking and felling, not working up a downed tree, much less brush. If I need that saw in the air, I refit the 32” and walk around the tree to make the larger crane cuts. Does that make sense?

    Chainsaw Shopping

So why put it on in the first place? I lucked into putting a 42” on my 394 several years ago, only because Bailey’s had a bar & chain combo sale. It was the best decision for felling/bucking big trees that I never thought about

    Chainsaw Shopping

Not to derail, and no offense Southsound (mad respect!), so what? I too have noted the nose-heavy condition, but oddly enough, but never noticed it when buried in a log. Why do we talk about things that ultimately don’t matter? Just sayin’…

    Chainsaw Shopping

    I second the 500i. It’s very comfortable with a 28, and pulls a 32 without struggling.

    Crane Company Issues - Advice

I'm in another camp. Since you have years of relationship, I would leave a message saying “How can we work this out?” If cooler heads prevail, you might be able to salvage a relationship, and get the work arranged in an win-win manner. If you get ghosted after that, no choice but to walk. Hope...

    ISC Nessie

I taught myself to manage my lanyard tail by tying it into a daisy chain. It takes a few extra seconds every now and then, but it keeps things tidy most of the time. I'm not young, nor close to fast anymore, so it's not much of a time drain for me.

    Subcontractor warnings

Thanks! I hope it helps others as they navigate this facet of the business. For perspective, #s 1, 2, and 8 above were the biggest obstacles on this project. It was subbing for another business owned by a friend who was not there (#1), so I mistakenly let my business guard down and did not...

    Subcontractor warnings

The biggest factor was a lack of listening and understanding by the other crew. My patience ran low, my tone sharpened, and they also became discouraged. The foreman was young, and didn't understand what I meant when I asked them to get us all on the same page. In retrospect, I should have...

    Subcontractor warnings

Yes, a chipper. It was in my sight the whole time, but they still ended up clogging the discharge chute. They didn't notice the smoke billowing out of the drum housing... We drove my son's truck which is mostly a rigging setup. I keep the toolbox for the chipper behind my truck seat, so we had...

    Subcontractor warnings

This thread goes out to all of you who subcontract, are thinking about subcontract work, or have wisely never performed subcontract work. I had a buddy who needed some help on a job (that's probably enough to set off a flurry of snarky yet true responses), and I committed to helping him out. It...

    GRCS for sale

Talk about derails Has anyone made an offer? I used one again last weekend and remembered why I never bought one. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool tool, but lowering off the winch is not my favorite activity.
