If you switch it to anything I’d recommend switching to the newer .325 .050 Stihl RS Pro. It’s about the fastest round ground chain I’ve seen out of the box.

Wondered if it was maybe gypsy moths myself. @EasternArborist around here they will sometimes leave the petioles, midrib, and some of the veins of leaves and munch the rest. You should be able to see those leaf “skeletons” with binoculars if you can’t outright see them with the naked eye.
Mines still chugging along happily chewing up anything I can fit in it. I really like the adjustable tongue feature. It makes filling the front of the box easier.
I’ve used both the Vermeer and Bandit 6” chippers quite a bit and agree the bandit is superior in almost every aspect. Even on something like spruce with large laterals on lower limbs would jam in the Vermeer causing them to need further processing. I am quite happy with my old Vermeer 935...
