@rico unfortunately I don’t think Newsome has enough spine. I’ve been impressed by Chicagos mayor who just called for a general strike, that is the type of action we need right now. The no kings is a great rally but has no direct action, the closet thing Newsome has done is just file lawsuits. While important it’s solely defensive.

It is absolutely astonishing that so many millions of us still don't grasp how a tariff works, that it is a penalty or punitive tax added to the price of a foreign incoming product to artificially drive up the cost in order to force the customer (us) to buy the more expensive domestic made version. When Trump brags about the millions, maybe even billions, of dollars the tariffs have generated, he is talking about money we paid, not the foreign company or producer. The irony is that, in so many instances, even with a massive tariff the foreign made product is still cheaper and we still have to buy it if we are on a tight budget. Thus that tariff simply drives up the cost for us, it doesn't help the domestic company making the higher priced one, and it doesn't help the overseas company. It helps no one except the US government collecting the tariff, as most professional economists had pointed out when Trump was first talking this up. What it also does do, is create massive ill will with our allies and foreign trading partners, many of whom move their business to someone else, as the Canadians and Mexicans both are doing right now when they were for so long our best and most loyal global economic allies. This does not make America great. Very little of what Trump is doing is actually making us great, particularly the division in this country right now that he happily exploits for his own purposes. He makes no attempt at all to unite us but rather purposely inflames tensions. How does this make us great? I honestly don't see how we can recover from three more years of the irreparable damage this vindictive, egotistical, bully is doing. We did manage to give the rest of the World hope last Saturday with an even larger turnout in protest than the first time, with the proof of that hope the several thousand large foreign solidarity protests. The GOP can try to spin this as 'hate America' but the only significant hate I recall was the Jan6th rally with a noose for Pence and dozens of cops injured and traumatized. If Trump and the 'party of law and order' are so concerned with protecting ICE and police doing their jobs, where was the protection that day while Trump sat and gloated watching it all on TV and doing nothing? If they are worried about crime in cities, why is it only blue cities he sends the National Guard to, not places with even higher murder rates like Mike Johnson's home state? And now this f*cking 90,000 square foot ballroom none of us will ever see the inside of? Privately funded by various donors and corporations? Right, where do they get their money then? Ultimately it is us paying, just like with his tariffs. We, both Left and Right, are being shafted royally.
