Rope Wrench - Hitch/Rope compendium.

Someone that knows Paul got permission to make a small batch as long as he didn’t bring it to market, which is not I don’t know if he wants me to say his name or not. I’d have to ask. I’m sure he’ll see the post and maybe throw his name out there

I weigh 165lbs. I've been using a Rope Wrench with a basic tether on 11mm Fly with 8mm x 28 inch Bee Line Black, with a 4 over 1 Schwabisch. Never an issue with either a top anchor or a basal anchor.

And thanks to @rico for the recommendation of 24" epicord 9.3 tied in a Petrocan – super smooth, minimal sitback! I can see how this setup would dial in even better with an Apex wrench and easier on/off for switching SRT/MRS...maybe when the next sale comes around :)
First time on epicord, probably gonna have to buy some for my HHXF now
Also the new ISC compact carabiner is essentially a DMM PerfectO for less $

I too took that advice, and spent the last two days this week roaming around a big raywood ash removal on a 3 wrap petroacan- 10mm beeline, 26" w/handspliced eyes, on 11mm sterling workpro- and it never started binding, had zero sitback, and grabbed perfectly everytime without thinking about it. Smooth in MRS or SRS. I am also running the Arbsession caralink v2. Game changer for close quarters.

Edit to add: I am sitting at 180 metric pounds with no gear at the time of posting

Does that carabiner on the top of the hitch climber pulley flop around on ascent? Does your SRT tether hook to that webbing on the side?

I didn’t find it to flop around at all, but I just tried it out for the first time today and did a few quick ascents. I used the center hole in the pulley for tending

A pic of my caralink step..Notice the rubber chingadera at the top of the tether is gone, and if you look close you will see that I use one of those DMM rubber grommets in the upper hole of the pulley to keep the caralink locked in place. This set up gives my Runner a serious run for its money when it comes to tending slack, but has that hitch based sweetness I have yet to feel from a mechanical.

I don't know how it would work for light weight climbers but I've been using the G-Force hitch I ran across on YouTube. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried it. Being a plus sized climber, hitch binding has been an issue. This hitch is the smoothest running hitch I have ever used. It is my new go to.
 
The G-Force will bind up with use, if the crossed sections in the back are crossed once more, you get the Soft Sticht, which doesn’t bind up.
 
Do you mean during the climb or over extended time as the hitch cord wears? I have enough trouble getting the legs through on the final steps. Adding another twist would make me crazy . I don't think there is a hitch out there that won't bind up under my weight.
 
It can happen during a climb, hand tending seems to accelerate the binding more than a neck,chest, or LOTS type tending.
The top hitch on the right is a back view of the G-Force, the Sticht, below it, shows the double crossing/twist. On the left is a 32” hitch cord,8mm, has just enough useable cord between the eyes for a Soft Sticht.

Not the answer I was expecting. I thought it might do the tending in that placement but I am guessing it cannot gab the rope without tension below it? So it would always take two hands to lower, one to work the hitch and the other to brake.

By the way if these weird questions should be kept somewhere else like my thread in the rec forum please let me know. I find asking odd or seemingly obvious questions a useful way to learn.

The Hitch Hilker is a friction device below the hitch, but the hitch engages it in opposite pull with the saddle bridge connector. It seems like you already understand all this, buuuut…

Waaaaay back in my trainer/demonstrator days, I would show climbers the principles of the RW function if they were new to the device. One thing I would demo is using a brake hand with a firm grip or semi wrap under my thigh, engage the Wrench and then break the hitch entirely slack. It’s a bit like a Figure 8 belay where you can control descent including stopping with teh brake hand.
