The latest Matt Cornell harness

Did 2 Oak removals today. One in the Valiant and one in a well worn MCRS, so it clearly wasn't a fair fight as far as comfort goes. That being said they definitely sit in your hips differently and offer a slightly different ride due to the dissimilar back-pad and leg-pads shapes.

Had an brand new MCRS sitting around here that I stole the suspension off of a while back. Just finished up splicing and stringing up the new suspension for it. Sweet.

Thanks... I have been wondering how guys felt about the differences from the old mcrs to the valiant

Spelling error noted and corrected.
I took it as a typo.....

It fit the bill though.

Carry on with the MC. You do nice work, Rico.
I still have my original. Been thinking of getting a MB to complement it.
MB for removals and the MC for crown work.

The MB is a kickass harness and I have no doubt that you would love it..

The Valiant is brand spankin new so things can and will change as the leather breaks in, but the shape of the backpad and leg pads will remain unchanged. You can see from the photo that the backpad on the MCRS is shaped like many of the best modern saddles, while the Valiant's shape is very much old school. This is going the cause them to sit on the hips differently. Which one is better will be in the eye of the beholder.

I have also found that the leg pads on the Valiant seem to find their sweet spot a little further up the thigh than the leg pads on the MCRS.

Though they are both rope saddles created by Matt, they have some very real differences...

I tore down my daily climber today and treated both the conveyor belt material and the leather with Ray Hole's saddle butter, and spliced up a new suspension. This saddle had already wreaked a lot of trees in the Sierra when it came into my life, and I myself have beat the shit out of it for over 2 yrs.. Man these MCRS are tough...She look almost new, but feels like a perfectly broken in pair of boots...

Noice. The swivel for your saw lanyard?

What the f!? That is genius, that and I have a couple a swivels with a purpose I have yet to discover
On the MCRS I hang my handsaw up front on my right ring and my chain saw just behind it on the swivel. Works really well for me. The 2 points are far enough apart that them getting tangled up is not an issue..Plus the swivel is right underneath the suspender attachment point so I get no sag when packing a larger saw. the swivel is also close enough to centerline that cutting from either side with either hand is no problemo. I like it.

Thanks for posting this Moss. I love the history he talks about and the individuality of each climber and how they can express them selves.

Got a good climb in on the Valiant today. I found the same on the leg loops. I also found the ring to slip a bit on the smooth leather of the leg pads. I may retie and orient the rings behind a webbing loop. Other than that, the d-rings out infant of the hips is a huge game changer for me. So much better. I find the Valiant to be a slimmer profile on my back but I can feel the thickness of the padding (in a good way). To be totally honest they are different but I found the differences to very subtle. Like so subtle I didn't even think about it until Rico said it. I'm thinking very little break in time. I got myself into some uncomfortable positions today just to see how it would perform. I was pleased and find it to be like putting on an old comfortable shoe.

My apologies if it should be obvious, but what’s the purpose of the rings on the underside of the leg pads?

Yep. I also find the padding is a little thicker on the Valiant. The leather is softening up very quickly, and its already clear that the back-pad on the Valiant is pretty special.....

The out front side dee location has been a little hit and miss for me. I love it on a lot of stuff, but when I'm working on a bigger diameter trunk/spar having the side dees set that narrow and up front is No Bueno for me. Another virtue of Matt's design.. Put em' where you like em'...Any other saddle on the market allow the user to do that?
