Your thoughts please!

Tell her to get more of these .

I lived with my grandparents for 8 years of my life. I learned (especially from my grandma) that old folks can be impulsive. She may want that now, but schedule it out one more month and see how she feels (after the vermin have had their plunder).

Na. It is not that simple, I know. Sometimes if you communicate the possible (negative) effects that could be left behind, people will become more hard/stubborn and about it. And then again, somethimes they will back down and realize they are putting their feeling ahead of their logic/reason.

How about take the cost to do the work, and tell her twice a year, at her call, for the next however many years, you will send someone over to rake up the acorns.

A lawnguy that is getting paid to save a tree.

I'd happily walk from a job involving removing half a tree (or even a whole tree) because of acorns or leaves.

I think that net idea just might work. Have it suspended from the tree, below the entire drip line. Then it all funnels to a little pile the squirrels can come get, or you can funnel it straight to a nearby garbage can.

I've rigged shades to prevent sun scald on fig and citrus to save a tree, so why not this? I like the funnel idea! Maybe you could use surrounding structures as well.

I'm thinking it could be made of something like that black mesh tarpy stuff that a lot of landscapers use to cover loads they are hauling on the freeway.

It could be even lighter than that, so as not to be so obnoxious looking. The loads on this shouldn't be that great, unless the acorns all piled up in one spot and didn't make it down the funnel.

You'd have to work into the bid a litle extra to come out 1 or 2 times to refine the setup so it is really like a big funnel.

Silly. But I'd do it.

Shoot. After all the acorns are collected, they could be attempted to germinate. Why not? Is there ever enough Oaks? Colorado could use a couple of hundred thousand/million.

I did the job last week. Saved both leaders after all. Took alot off the one over house and drive to relieve the acorn problem but still left enough on to let the leader stay viable. On the neighbor's side I cut it well clear of their roof which also helped the overall balance.

I think it was a good overall solution. Sorry no pix. Thanks to all for the excellent input.

It was definetly alot more balanced than if the whole leader were removed. I made all good collar cuts. Probably took off 30 to 35% in total.

And it was interesting that the customers were totally open minded to the change for the overall good of the situation.

Its hard to say without pictures but what you described, sounds like you made the best of the situation. Did what was best for the tree, and still was able to satisfy the customer. Good Job

I think some people just need to trust the expert that he/she will make good choices when trimming their trees. Sounds like the lady needed to trust your decision making and see the results. And when she saw the results she was pleased. --Good job
