X-rigging rings

Sweet,sweet rigging rings............ can't wait..........

is in the air...........

Here’s my first serious rigging system, built around the X-ring and the CMI145 block. Lots of value, flexibility and strength. It comes at a price: the tenex is strong but it picks. You have to baby it. And the adjustability means you’re carrying a lot of cordage.

I’m thinking I’ll pair this with a short, fixed-length eye X-sling of stable braid to take most of the routine abuse. I’ll hold the whoopie for when I need max strength or max flexibility. Of course the block can go back and forth but still each sling is useable as a standalone rigging point.

X/CMI Heavy Duty Rigging Whoopie

If somebody builds the “Wedgie”, let me know about it. I want to know how it works with other blocks. Use stable braid (not tenex) at the design max of your block (not the biggest bull rope you happen to be using).

These X-rings are the best thing since sliced bread.

Can't wait to see video. I'm in the land of the dead right now, with a stomach virus. I make many mistakes texting, took me for ever writing that response to daniel today. Phone not loading vid good. Their are a lot of smart guys out there, going to be interesting the configurations people come up with. Tenex doesn't pick nearly as bad as amsteel blue.

I bought some XRR Slings from David, and can already see the multiple uses for them. They arrived yesterday and are REALLY awesome. This is a compact rigging system that will really make a BIG difference in our work plans.

First job planned for them is a dead pine for next week. I’ll take plenty of pics and post them on this thread.

Thanks David for everything and I hope you get over that virus soon, though you really do deserve some rest as well :)

x2 on that retrieval, OF!

Now, I don't want to get too technical here, but I'm not sure the ring and block truly share 1/2 the load each. Depending on where the ring lies against the edges of the block plates, the bisect of the rope angle through each unit will alter which will increase or decrease the load to some degree. Sure, it would be a negligible amount, but still there.

Old fart you are the man! I love the wedgie idea.. great innovation with the x rings. I'm so glad to be in this industry at such a time where there is so many improvements and new ideas..

Guys, i appreciate the comments.  I'm down with  a roaring cold/flu.  Nice to see the enthusiasm.

Yeah, the wedgie works.  I tried a tether idea for a long while but failed over the very small difference between the bull rope od and the x-ring id.  The wedgie is nice cuz there's nothing on the block to interfere and I don't have to remember to do something ahead of time.  I found a retired old hank of fat slick line, now it's my "retrieval system".  Easier on the hands.

Eric, you got me thinking about the imbalanced loads.  I've actually seen the situation you described just take care of itself.  The angles and such on the initial setup shift as the real load comes on the system.  The crotch acts as a inefficient pulley working to equalize the two loads.  Not perfectly, but certainly small enough to be well, well within the SF.   BUT you could be seriously right  for the choking basket configuration.  it  dawned on me that the pulley model doesn't necessarily work  because the crossing leg can Indiana Jones the system and transfer the load to just one leg.  I'm thinking that a better practice in that configuration would be to set the whoopie so there's an "air gap", maybe 2-4", between the ring and pulley.  That should force the load onto both legs regardless of what,s happening with the round turn.  Will that work?  My brain isn't working yet ... It still hurts to type!

Just because my poster looked like this:

Doesn't mean that's how you use them.

This real picture was sent to me by Riggs, asking if this was how to use them.

Who would hire someone with huge gauged out ears and lip piercings like that?

[/ QUOTE ]

an 'equal opportunity employer'? a left leaning bohemiam type like Riggs?

or

a company that specializes in subvervise/non mainstream John Travolta lookalikes?

To be honest I would Nick, as long as he did his job properly. Does it matter what a bloke/gal looks like. Cause nowadays a lot of folk would be without work if we thought like that. This ain't the dark ages. Live and let live I dare say.....at least that's how I roll...

Now here are my goodies that arrived today, thanks X for your invention and thanks Rich for your awesome splices. Two go to my buddy and the rest are mine. I know I got my next order in my head already... These are going to help me a lot... Will get some action pics soon..

Fair enough Swing!

Keep in mind, I can be pretty close-minded sometimes. To me that look just doesnt exude 'professional' or 'hard working'. Its unfair to judge a book by the cover but its what we do as people. As an employer, regardless of my evaluation, or the actual facts regarding a workers value, my biggest concern would be customer perception. I strive to represent what we do as a professional expert trade craft, that image doesnt help that cause IMHO.

In a body art/piercing/tattoo parlor it wouldn't be out of place at all.

Edit: I alluded to the 'hazard' buts it is really worth noting that those gauges and lip rings could REALLY injure the wearer.
