WR advancement with hand ascender?

Wondering if its a bad idea to use the hand ascender with a small sling to advance the rope wrench. Haven't come across any info on it so wasn't sure.

I use a frog walker system with neck bungie to advance it currently.

Make sure that the ascender and your climbing line are compatible, based on manufacturer recommendations of everything in your system.

Is your current system not working for you?

The neck bungie works well, just hate having something around my neck. Tried the lanyard over the shoulder idea and that seems a bit sloopy.

Something like this might feel better for your neck... this bungee setup attaches to the back of my harness (green carabiner), then splits into two legs (a loop of bungee), one over each shoulder, then attaches to the wrench with the blue carabiner. I have a little hitch adjuster on it, when I take it off the wrench I can slack it so it doesn't bother me around my neck. I use a Hitch Climber pulley with my ZK-2, the blue carabiner clips into the middle attachment point on the HC. I've been using this for advancing a Croll and now the ZK-2 for at least 3 years.

I know a couple climbers who use the Kong Futura to advance the wrench. Been a few posts showing how people take the safety lock off the Futura cam so it's easy-on, easy-off for wrenching.

I think it's a reasonable and safe way to advance the wrench, it would drive me crazy though to have to move it up by hand except for maybe a really long straight up ascent.

Why would you need a break away if the ascender is above the RW and not attached to the climber?

The ascender is still ultimately attached to the climber. I don't feel comfortable with those tools, I just don't dig on 'em.

Why not?

I just girth a 12" dyneema sling on a cheek plate of the wrench and slide it into my hand that I'm grabbing my hand ascender with. It works really well for me and doesn't require anything around the neck or chest etc.. I always have my hands above my chest during ascent so the wrench is always where I want it to be. When I'm ready to work I just daisy the sling up and it's there for a quick redirect too.

Re: RW advancement with hand ascender?

I attach an ascender into the top of my RW tether and that pulls my whole system up. Here is an old video. Its changed some as i now use a stiff tether. But you can see the same concept.

Nice videos countryboy. I like that there not a helmet cam vid of someones hands climbing a rope. Easy to see the set up.

Going to give it a try as well as niceviews sling idea.
