Woodchippersafetyshield

Hello all, I am the inventor of the wood chipper safety shield. Morbark brands this Chipsafe. I have talked with Vermeer, Bandit, and Altec. They have not expressed any interest in moving forward with advance safety system on there machines. Bandit told its dealer counsel in Sept 2018 that if dealers wanted to put this device on there machines they could. Vermeer safety officer on Jan 28 at a tcia meeting in Sacramento that nothing would prohibit an owner of a vermeer from installing a device on there machines. The stats show that users are getting hurt and or killed at an alarming rate. A recent artical from the American journal of industrial medicine says that manufactures should install fully automatic feed wheel stopping devices. At the advisory comittee meeting this was brushed off my the manufactures. Cal osha will include requirements for presence sensing systems at the next advisory meeting later this year. The wood chipper safety shield is now available for your chippers. All brands. Iam looking for distributors to handel the sales and installations. Check it out at woodchippersafetyshield.com I would like to hear what you think about this post thank you

Interesting. So a magnet activates the feed wheel stop mechanism? Do you have to mount a magnet on any tool, rope, person, ect. that you want to trip the sensor?

The system works by detecting a change in magnetic field. The magnets used on the system are matched to the device. Magnets can be attached to tools that you don’t want to enter the chipper. I must warn that the device has been tested with the use of the proper magnets only. Proper magnets must be used

It could be cool to figure out a way to do this so steel doesn’t get thrown in. Chipped a steel planter pot stand a few months ago

I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking, a metal detector... but then I realized that wouldn't work due to the metal all around it. Maybe you could make a fiberglass in-feed shoot...

One of the tree buzz folks came up with a metal detection type of system many years ago. Not sure if any proto types were created or not. It would be interesting to see one. Something that we have experienced with the magnetic field. When this was new and being used by my crew I asked them if all is working ok. He said it stops with a rake they were useing as a push paddle. I was shocked first your using a rake to push stuff in? Second why would it stop the in-feed rollers? Turns out the rake had become magnetize. This was enough to trip the system.

I was once working on a land clearing job where they had a bigger chipper with a grapple arm and were bringing loads to the chipper with a bobcat with a grapple then feeding the hipper with the grapple. An old drive shaft from a small truck ended up going thru the chipper. A system to prevent something like that would be ideal. Can't rely upon old metal to have somehow become magnetized. Your system is still great, don't get me wrong. It could save lives. Either way, to prevent a person from going thru, they need to have either a magnet or metal on their body.
