wizz saw or stick saw

Stick saw, limb lopper, Never used a wizz saw but I don't think I would like it. Doesn't seem too good for light chunking and doing slow cuts, or cut and throw type stuff..

Whizz saw definitely. I don't even carry a stick saw on my bucket. Also, neutron, I feel just the opposite about the cut and throw method. tried it with a stick saw, couldn't do it. I'm sure it was the way the saw was sharpened but I find it does a number on very small branches.

I have used both in the past and prefer the stick saw. The whizz saw is not good for making proper cuts and is notorious for bad kickback accidents, I believe Asplundh banned them years ago due to the booms of truck being cut beyond repair due to kick back. It does get alot of production but at a cost.

the new style blades go a long way to reducing the "kickback" of the whizz saws. I find I can make better cuts with the wizz saw due to the angle of the head. with a stick saw I find I have to get closer to 90deg. to the branch to make a proper cut. to each their own though :)

Treebear: A Stick saw is a hydraulic chain saw on a 6-8' insulated pole with it's valve incorporated in the handle on the other end. A wizz saw has a circular saw head set at about 30 degrees from the pole. In the hands of a FNG or unreformed eucman, both can do damage to tree and operator alike. No one tool will work on every tree and a good LCTT will carry a hydraulic pruner for the fine work. Before everyone starts scoffing about the 20 lb. monster pruners out there, check out this one built by ADI: http://www.karlkuemmerling.com/prod29.htm
Lite, 360 rotation on the head and the valve is in the pole not the handle! (Damned things get hot with use).

While operating a whiz saw, a crew member caught a stub and it threw it back at him at mach 5. Hit him in the lips, horrible. A couple days later, while cutting a branch, an Atlas cedar cone fell into the saw, it shot back and hit the bucket right in front of me, made a huge mark and a big BAM! noise, it scared the daylights out of me.

I agree, both have their place. I never used a hydraulic pruner very much, I always felt very limited with that tool.
any of you guys run a skidder-boom? thats pretty fun.
