I found this to be interesting. The National Science Foundation funded research into the effects of ice storms on forest ecology. It moves from techniques to creating the effects of an ice storm to soil health and ecological changes. It gives a person some things to think about when dealing with the effects of storm damage.

I'm a consultant on that Hubbard Brook Study on ice injury. I might be taking too much credit, but I think at least some of the experimental design was stimulated by my work with Walter Shortle on the 1998 ice storm and recovery in northern New England. Publications from that work are linked to my US Forest Service webpage, linked to my profile. Wally and I did the observations. Lindsay Rustad, John Campbell, and others then set up the artificial storm protocol. Very neat!
