"Wind thinning" on PNW conifers

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

Compare that tree with examples of Douglas-fir trees in Bob Van Pelt's book Identifying Mature and Old Forests in Western Washington - Figure 56. on pages 62 and 63. Shows Crown opacity of trees of different vigor. The tree you have in the photo will not last long. I hope the majority would agree that the photos of the tree in Bellingham represent overpruning.

It will take a while to load.

Good link

Didn't realize that it's online. That must save a lot of printing and shipping. The copies are free though from what I understand if folks request a hard copy. I have the eastern and western books.

Those are what I bring along for extra reading at night at the motel on my redwood trips.

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

The thinned fir looks ripe for branch breakage. the consultant's specs if any would be interesting to see--no evidence of reduction cuts just removal. wtf?

bob van pelt does a great job. he's a classmate from UW-Mad in the 80's, now does good work with measuring tree volume.

wish i could draw like that.

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

Guy,
I don't think the consultant and the tree trimmer communicated. I have seen other projects inspected by that consulting arborist and he sugguests reduction cuts, etc.
I am friends with the man that trimmed this tree. In his defense, there was alot of deadwood and a co-dom stem half way up...

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

ok without a before pic and/or being there i can't say for sure.

in any case no point in judging...no codom visible--did it all come off?

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

I think I see a 'jog' in the trunk where the codom came out. Anyway, my friend described this trimming to me and sounded a little frustrated with the tree, the people, etc. He has 30 plus years experience... :)

Re: \"Wind thinning\" on PNW conifers

often best biomechanically speaking to subordinate rather than remove codoms imo, esp. on mature trees.

Client interference can mess things up. they need to state their goals, accept the specs, and gtf out of the way.

of course if specs are not written then it can be a mess.
