I was like whatever for the first 32 seconds until he missed a dyno, recovered then instead of trying it again proceded with I do not even have a clue what they call that leelou breakdance spiderman upside down under the crotch jobbie yoga move. Props.

Oh my then at 1.11 the foot hook upside down look mom no hands, I've seen roped ice climbers do stuff like that with heel spurs but...

Not to down play anybit of his awesomeness but...there were lots of chalk marks. Showing he learned the routes. Practice hard moves at low heights until perfected. I like cirque du solei too.

He's only 23, what's the saying about old and bold climbers. Seen a few godly solo rock/ice climbers end things early.

And yea about the teaching kids that stuff. Maybe they have a lot of manic/depressed suicidal orphans looking for the next extreme sport in India.

Yep. That was one of the sickest moves I've ever seen.

Not trying to derail, but does everyone set lines before climbing? I free climb with chainsaw attached. Been doing it for 23 years. I see no need to set a climb line when hooks are to be used anyway, and I got tired many years ago of pulling a saw up. Seems by the time the lines were set, he could have already been lowering limbs...still a good job and good video.

I do. I like the advantage of a high tie in as I go up.
If your going to do any cutting, you have a second tie in.
I set a line, spikes or not, unless its a small tree.
If your groundie has you on belay, you can haul your butt up there alot quicker and safer

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I'm hoping by free climb you mean on at least a lanyard.

We set lines no matter what. That way I always have a good tie in, a second tie in, and i'm capable of working the tree from the ground up. It really helps with my manueverability on low, longer limb walks.

Also, if the trunk is really large, I find that I stumble around a bit with my lanyard flipping abilities. With a TIP set from the get go I am able to access the tree easier by by passing the flip line route all together and body thrust my way to the canopy, and a stronger healtier me

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I have had many a good climbers over the last 20 years and while the best can be defined many ways, I have to say Peter Suomie is the absolute best climber/ tree worker I have ever had work for me. He was well trained by some of the industry's finest and surpassed them with great measure. I'm sure some on here may not agree with that but.... I am also sure of those, none would be able to keep pace with him.

Oh yeah....he is black....if that matters.

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I set a line for safety reason. First you can pull on it and see how the tree reacts (sways, make sure not starting to uproot or ground moves, check for cracks) second as others point out, gives second tie in point for using a chainsaw, third for safety. In case of an emergency (bees, injure yourself, etc.) if you need to bail in a hurry you can, or if you need to be rescued its much easier to rescue a person with a tie in point then someone standing on a spar.

I personally don't try for my final tie in point all though it would be nice, i just try to hit a higher big branch union that will make for an easy shot and will help in me hauling my butt up there.

As for carrying a saw up, not normally i set up my block(s) normally will cut a small piece first with handsaw to see where my lowing point will be then have them pull it up on the lowing line. Works for me, i like to travel light.

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

Wow born2climb you takin me down memory lane. I worked for a company from '84-about-'90 and we spiked all treework and yes ft "freeclimbed EVERYTHING! " all those trees in haddonfield etc also never even new what a pulley was til about '91-ish. I actually wonder A lot how I survived!!
Climb to the top ....no rope or lanyard......tie in ....start workin! INSANE!!!

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I hear ya, that is so 70's too. We only spiked take downs but never pre set ropes or used lanyards on way up. I remember one time was going up a giant pin oak tk down and about 50 feet up my line tangled and stuck in the 24 foot aluminum extension ladder I started off. Didn't have my hands half way around the tree in beginning. Well just had to continue up to near the top to tie in climb line and then pull up the ladder I had just climbed almost half the tree with it attached to me like an anchor and take it off and throw it down to the ground as I was working by myself. Woulda made an interesting vid.

Another good laugher was to climb to the top and go to tie in and find you forgot your climbing line and have to spike down without a lanyard either.

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I'm gonna have to say Pat isn't the best Black tree climber, what about that colored fella with the dread locks you see winning the ITCC every year....he's pretty good...doesn't smell so nice but a good little climber

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

Who cares who the best black climber in the world is? ...or white, or red or yellow? What's the point?

There is no way to ever actually know anyway.

Pat's obviously a good climber... isn't that enough?
