Who is the best black tree climber in the world?

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I liked the video. It communicates the objectives and shows them being done. It is one thing to say we are effecient, but to explain why we are effecient is cruital. You did a good job of listing ways you will be efficient.

But, can we address the choice of rope placement, like Jim Mulkey (Jman) pointed out? I personally don't see the reason for placing the ropes close to the middle of the load when blocking stuff down. I reasonably place my ropes near the butt end a vast majority of the time.

If the placement of the rope is further out, it increases the risk of the climber to get hit, by the butt end, when it falls into the trunk of the tree. --I say "increases the chance" because if the groundsman doesn't allow it to run (or there are too many wraps on the lowering device) the butt end will smash someone.

However, if every load is tied to the butt, the possibility of the climber being smashed by the butt end is very very unlikely.

And I understand that when the rope is placed further out you can save on the length of the limb being lowered in tight areas. And, it can allow someone to rig out whole length limbs, but I don't like it for the reason I stated above...

wanna see people of color climbing trees? come to memphis. we have some pretty good climbers here, although most are old school and still ride a taunt line.

What other climbing knot can you tie with one hand Jeff?

why do you need to tie with one hand jomoco? do you climb without a skip line? do you ascend with no knot and no safety, only pulled up the tree by groundmen with the lowest possible tie in? those would be the only times i could think that i would want to tie my SAFETY knot one handed. one handing it you take tie , dress, and set and throw it out the window! i ride a taught line sometimes just to keep it real. one of the best climbers i know rides a taught line. its still old school.

Agreed, and please forgive my crankiness as an old school taughtline hitch "ridin" traditionalist myself.

Everytime I see these new modern climbers with more new gadgets than you can count hanging on their saddles it cracks me up a little as a dedicated minimalist climber.

I'm one of those guys that ties my 200 at a midpoint in the tree just to lose the weight, and start brushing strategic nasty limbs with my razor sharp handsaw.

Using that little purple pulley as a slack tender is a neat innovation that I use though!

Yeah Familytree!!!

Come on Treevet. U dont think a climbers ability can be gauged when they are on spikes??? Thats rubbish. There are climbers out there who specialize in pruning and others who are removal climbers. Pruning doesnt require as much rigging knowlege but pruners are quicker on their feet most generally. All I know is that I have seen some climbers like Pat who can smoke a big tree because of their rigging skill and knowlege.

I'd choose to go with "whose the best black take down guy" because of the spikes Flash. Not a whole lot of moving around (climbing) in that vid and what there is, is aided by spikes. Great rigging tho.

I could easily handle that take down as well (again the editing leaves much to the imagination) as Pat and, hey, I just turned 60. Pruning the tips of a giant syc. with no spikes, much more difficult proposition.

Oh and as far as pruning... Pat can accurately set a throw line by hand at 95'-100'... He'll footlock up single or double, set a friction saver and move anywhere on a tree in hurry. He prunes tips with a hand saw... Makes em pretty.

I have not tried to video pruning big trees yet becasue its hard to get a clear camera shot when there is a lot of foliage, and its hard to show the results of a properly pruned tree before and after on a little 2 dimensional screen.

Might be able to do something with the bucket truck to move the camera into a good position relative to the climber.

Dan, you can climb. Take a camera with you and climb with Pat!!!

Re: Who is the best black tree climber in the worl

I agree with Jamin- there are some of those pieces of wood being rigged that the rope being tied closer to the but would have prevented the butt from kicking back. I was taught very early on that when rigging pieces butt heavy , placing the rope nearer the butt will put the climber in a much safer position.
Who ever was handling the ropes on the ground obviously was skilled enough to keep the climber from getting pegged.
Also I noticed a ground man sneaking into the LZ with what appeared to be a ball cap and ear muffs- sorry to be the dick to point this out but when you are posting "how to" videos on tree buzz you have to expect this type of scrutiny!
