Part of my caution with this one was because of the weakness of these trees...I felt there was a serious risk of the whole supporting limb breaking off if I starting cutting on the hanger and it shifted and shocked the limb. So I couldn't tie into the fir as I would have been in harms way. And the other tree was too far away and very dead.
If I had had a power pruner I likely could have pieced the butt off, although I don't know if I could have made the cuts from one side, it was still a little large.
