I don't believe signed contracts are necessary unless it is a major job ($10k +), but that's just my opinion based on experience. It certainly doesn't hurt to have them sign something.

I have every proposal signed before we start any work. I find people try to stiff you when they try to add extra work to the proposal and you tell them it will be time and material after the work is completed. they generally start counting the hours then and t and m to them is the time you spend on their property. they dont like to take into account the time it takes to travel and load up gear at the shop. but this is what can make or break a job.
