... you have me 'stumped'. What part of the world is it from? and, can you get a shot of the heart wood to see the ring growth?

It looks alot like a distressed Platanus
It was kind of a trick question, the wood is from a sycamore maple. that section was girdled, my guess about 2 years ago. the tree had a full top in it with no dead wood, so it was going a good job of trying to overcome the 4 foot section of bark removal.
This pic shows the transition.....there are 2 pieces of ailanthus in the pic also , so please disreguard them.
