What is wrong with my Dawn Redwood

Location
US
Hi, I grew the Redwood from seed. It is now around 5 years old, 8' tall and has a serious lean, as well as a bare, smooth length of trunk that is several feet long. Also some browning. It has been getting water every day. An suggestions would be great. Thanks, Mike

Water every day ?
US location ?

I'll be watching this post.
In Sept. 2015, I planted a Dawn Redwood ~ 8 ft tall.

Last year, NE Ohio had some dry periods, so I very occasionally watered it.
I had 5 gal plastic pail, with a 1/8" hole in the bottom, to control the water flow.
I would fill the pail a couple times.

Last fall it was 14 ft. ! ~ 6 ft growth in 1 yr ! ! !

Yes, I have been watering every day that it hasn't rained using a garden hose on trickle. It has been a very rainy spring/early summer here in Rhode Island. Wow, 6' in 1 year! I wish!

All of my transplants have not started that quickly.

In 1999 I planted, among other things, 200+ Eastern Hemlock seedlings.
Two (2) to 3 yrs old; 12 - 18" tall.
Planted in 2 rows, staggered 8' apart, within a 600' long tree line; with only morning sun.

They literally took ~6 yrs to acclimate. They were at the same initial height by that time ! ! !

Some are now 10 - 12 ft high.
A very few are bonsai / pygmy's .............. they are exactly the same 12 - 18" high ! ! !
Go Figure !

Looks like it grew too fast for it's own good there for a while. Note the lack of significant laterals along the main stem and a lack of taper as well. Looks like perhaps some old laterals were there and died back?

Herbicide is more doubtful given the broadleaves in the lawn but how about a pre-emergent application to the lawn?

Perhaps some leaf stippling from a sucking insect or pest.

Actually, it now looks taller than 14 ft, so I remeasured.
The white "surveyor's stick" / "leveling rod" is 16.5 ft.
So it grew 2.5 ft more over the winter / spring.

That's 8.5 ft of growth in 21 months ! (Sounds like a bean stalk fairly tail ???)

I do have a ~4 ft bed of mulch / wood chips. (I need to extend it.)

Nice Greg! Get that mulch bed beyond the drip line.
Looks like it is growing in full shade and looking for light, not that there is anything wrong with that. Just quite a bit of vertical growth in relation to lateral.

Not full shade; just a cloudy morning when I took the pic.
I am also surprised at the vertical growth. I guess it just likes the location.

See 2nd sunny photo.

Personally, I think it may have just had 1 unusual growth year.
I would use some soft webbing to stake & straighten the upper stem in a couple places.
Remove the webbing after 1 year (2 years max.).

Plants develop better resistance to wind, etc. when left in their more natural state.

Eight (8) ft after only 5 years from seed, seems exceedingly GOOD !

I don't think it is deer.
In my area they don't start eating conifers until they get desperate in winter. (They did eat a huge % of my 200+ pine seedlings.)
Since Dawn Redwood is deciduous, all the leaves / needles would be gone.

Another thought .............
I can't tell from the pic, is some of the tilt / lean due to poor / shallow root structure ?

Watering every day will tend to keep the roots relatively shallow.
Drier, more "normal", conditions require the roots to grow deeper to get to the moisture.

How far away from the concrete is the tree? It's probably an illusion due to the compressed space created by the camera lens, but it looks close.

I have a big Dawn Redwood in my neighborhood that seems like it's not set back far enough from a public road, and might eventually cause a problem. It would be nice to give them enough room to grow for 300 years.

It is 8.5 ft from the concrete driveway & ~14 ft from a sidewalk.
I know it is not ideal; but it was the "best" aesthetic spot.
At least it's not a roadway, with salt & spray.

25 years ago, there was a clump of 3 large hickory trees right there; I had to remove them since the construction did them in.
