what are you worth

ok, I just want to push this. What would a guy that has 20+ years of climbing be worth to you? has on papers (isa or such certs) but can climb great and works like a dog for ya.
do the certs mean that much cuase in the state we are in they don't really mean s*&^ any joe blow could have a bizz, it's more or less about the price or the salesman to push the sale. I would like to know what to pay a guy like this?

Are you team centered? or self centered? If self I wouldn't hire the guy! If team, and can do all of the things a foreman leader ought to do.
25.00 to 28.00 plus health, 401k 3% match, two weeks paid, & paid holidays, three personal days commision on upsells and walk ups!!!

My minimum is $50 an hour, for the most part. If they don't like it, they can call all those other "climbers" out there.

No insurance, I'm on their payroll. But I'm not an "in-house" guy. Strictly part time. I shuffle between 3 to 5 (sometimes more) different tree companys.

You must be able to do the jobs their regular climber isn't comfortable doing, or the owner isn't comfortable letting them do. It's almost NEVER easy, for the most part.

That's dang good, MB....to be on their boox.....of course most of those guys prolly don't have anyone worth a darn besides you.

I'm payingMickey, my latest arborist about $300 a day, on the boox, 3-6 days a week (He works for other guys now and then. He's top notch as a pruner, but dilly dallies on the ground from time to time, and isn't fast like me or Cowboy Dave on removals....

Dave just got a business license, and now I'm paying him about $400 a day or a tad less...but to be legit, he must get insurance for me to pay him as a sub (and the new Washington law probably requires him to have a contractor's license as well)...He doesn't really realize that that is the legality and reality, as the couple other companies he works for seem to think they can write off what they're paying him....Won't fly with my insurance co, or Workman's comp, Unemp, or the Infernal Revenooers....

But, paying him $400 a day versus $300, he would have the $1200 needed for insurance in about 12 work days.....

I'd pay less if I offered full bennies....but that's too much paperwork and hassle for me at this time..

Ah I gotchya MB ! That makes sense. I could use a guy once in a while like that. Right now that guy is me and periodically it would be great to share the load a bit, until my guy gets up to speed ! thanks fer the feedback!

i really need to start looking into other companies, you guys are completely blowing away what i make hourly, but i cant complain too much, i am fortunate to work full time year round

Then the company covers any [unlikely] property damage or injuries on the job? If you're an employee then your medical bills and lost wages would be covered.

Part of the interview is to try and set a value on the employee's production. Can you make money on their work? A high wage employee still has to be paid for riding in the truck to and from the job. Will they put enough work on the ground to justify themselves?

One of the benefits of worker's compensation is to cover partial wages and full medical expenses to the employee. This doesn't cost an employee anything, or the employer more, it's required by law in most states.

Yo marc! It does not always make sense to " chase the money"
there is always another fifty sense or a dollar out there. no matter what you are currently making. Just like as an owner ther is always a company with bigger and nicer gear than I have .
The important thing is to be part of a good team with room to grow and contribute. Way it all out and if it makes sense stay put?! You can make yourself insane always thinking there is a better deal some place else

A tree company needed a Certified Arborist to be on site to remove exodics. I charged 125.00 per hour for 9 hours just to make sure they cut only the exodics and damaged no native trees. they made thousands on the job, so it was not unreasonable.

Original question...

What are you worth?

The least amount it takes to replace you.

$125/ hr to identify exotics, wow! I would pay considerably less for not spelling it correctly.

I won a good expert witness case once because the CA misidentified a common native species and misspelled another.

ooh, you are so correct on the spelling. Cross my T's and dot my I's. I have no defense, it's right there in black and white. Sheepish!

Lmao UUUUUMMMMMMM case in point that there ISA cert really don't mean so much now does it Eric. Not that I'm against it or anything but really, if a guy knows his job is he worth less the the guy that has the paper or the BA, I think not cuase most the time the guy that knows just as much without the paper is probally better simple fact he had to learn it in the feild and the hard way not just told by the class teacher. Any who, just ventting some steam thanks for the input guys.
