What are some fun things to do once in the canopy?

When I was a kid, I used to climb (no gear) up a tree in my yard and read for hours at a time. Some days I'd spend the whole afternoon up in the tree hidden from the neighborhood by the leaves.

If I go for a recreational climb I might go late afternoon / early evening. The sky and the sun from the canopy is amazing at that time of day.

We had a huge sycamore on our back fence when I was a kid and behind us was a vast soybean field. There was a guy who crop dusted this field pretty regularly in some sort of old biplane, flying low so the spray would not blow too far in the wind before settling. His wheels were literally brushing the soybeans. For about three adjacent passes, he would pull out right above this tree I was in, with his wheels almost into the leaves of the tree. It was a great thrill. Creeps me out just remembering this! And would have given my parents heart attacks if they had ever known. - Stew

@Nish You get honorable mention, I finally made the video.

Nice going Joel, great work. I think you could get to that bell with a Captain Hook, just sayin' ;-)

Putting a musical ensemble in a tree has been my top ongoing tree climbing fantasy which I intend to do sooner than later!

The other top fantasy which I must do is to see how far I can go though the forest canopy horizontally in one day dawn to dusk (or after dusk why not) without ground support setting ropes etc.. Rules are anything goes just as long as it's not destructive to tree and forest parts, feet don't touch the ground and zero ground support. I can also see this as team sport with teams of 2 or 3 working together in the canopy. It could also be multi-day for the marathoners out there. For the multi-day event food and water caches could be left on the ground but they have to be snagged from above.

I am beyond jealous that you have a tuba! Any outtakes on rigging the tuba up? Mini-Traxion to the rescue!

Jonathan Richman, performing his song "There's Something About Mary" in a tree:

Here's an interview where Richman (on the left) talks about filming the song up in a tree for the movie @8:55 in, the rest of the interview is good too. What a guy, I first heard his song about the secretaries working downtown at Government Center in Boston when I was working in a mailroom downtown Boston near Government Center, I knew then he nailed it. But I digress...

This was a blast to make, I need to make a behind the scenes video with the extra footage and all the fails.
I will let you in on a camera psych secret, there is a transitional shot at the top of the tree where I turn sideways and play the harmonica, then the shot continues from below like it's a different angle. The below shot is actually 2 days later and about 4 feet off the ground ;) , if you look close there is sleet coming down and the instruments are wet. I just had my son hand me the instruments and shot all 3 in about 5 minutes.
Those are great vids, I need to watch them when I can sit down and take notes.

It does look like fun making the video, but next time please at spit out a few teeth and crunch some celery. It conveys a lot of good information about tree climbing. As for product placement, you almost can't tell its even happening. :tanguero:

Wasn't there a fantastic video made with a couple guys (I think up in BC) where they spent days traversing tree to tree and living up in the canopy without setting foot on the ground? I wish I had bookmarked it.

Any recommendations on positions or apparatus to facilitate this ? I've been mulling it over ... I feel like a tree boat would be prime
Yea, some kind of hammock is nice. Harness problems are tricky, one with buckles on the inside of the legs is the ticket. Or a zippered/cut out crotch.
I'm wondering now what a fully nude climb would be like...
As for position? Get creative! Definitely best in a branchy tree.

Hmmm, it might be easy to forget questions of safety at height when focused on the more passionate side of things. One would have to make sure all involved were tied in rather well. (The rope would have to be nice soft stuff like Vortex, gentle on her wrists and ankles). Yes, most interesting line of thought! I think I need a cold shower now.

If you video the event, just remember to use appropriate tree-porn names. It does remind me of the hanging basket technique, where the girl sits in a hanging basket with a hole in the middle, suspended from a limb. All the guy has to do is pull up and down on the limb, while spinning the basket on his (insert eggplant emoji).

So next order ...

-Treeboat
-Swivel
-Lube
-soft rope

Has anybody ever been blacklisted from Treestuff before?
