What are some fun things to do once in the canopy?

When I get into the canopy, I usually sit on a limb to rest a little and then I start to move around a small amount. I take in the view and take a close look at the tree to see if I see any unusual lichen or moss. Maybe if I knew more about things to look for then I could keep myself amused longer.

So what are some interesting things that can be done while in the canopy?

I do most of my climbing alone so I don't have the luxury of conversation. I consider my climbing as exercise and my climbs are for developing better skills. So I don't feel like I am wasting time.

I have started taking a small hand saw with me so that I can remove small and dead limbs making my favorite climbing tree more climber friendly. I have also gotten lazy about throwing up a line and I am now leaving a small nylon cord over my tie in point so that I can pull up my pull up cord and then pull up my rope.

I always climb with a daypack. I use an 18L pack for multipitch rock climbing and carry up some snacks and a camera. It is awesome just to chill on a limb and eat a delicious sandwhich. You could also camp. If you can't stay overnight just bring a cheapo hammock up with you and take a nap.

A hammock, food, and a swing all sound good.

Do you spend the night in the trees? I don't know if I could be comfortable enough to sleep. I like to flip around in the bed and there would not be much room to move in my regular hammock.

Ya there are a bunch of threads about it in recreational climbing. You can buy a "treeboat" or use a portaledge or you can easily make a hammock for tree climbing that is much more comfy than a cheapo walmart hammock. Canopy camping is my favorite type of camping!

Find the best swing in the tree and work it until perfected.

Thanks for this post, tomthetreeman. That is something I've never thought about doing. Usually when I climb I have a specific objective in mind, with regard to deadwooding, usually. Maybe in the future, if I manage to climb in a large, spreading tree, I'll take the time to look around and see if such an opportunity exists.

Thanks for this recommendation.

Aside from the usual ice chest, keg, blender, margarita mix and lots of tequila (just kidding), I can offer a few options here.

For Hammock Camping there's:
  • Tensile tents with 3 tie-in points - to be like Ewoks in Starwars
  • Treeboat hammocks with 4 tie-in points and two connection points
  • Single or Double hammocks
For just hanging out in trees there's:
  • Yoga hammocks - going full Avatar
  • Yoga swings - going Crouching Tiger
  • Regular Tree Swings - going childlike
  • Slack-lines (tied between trees) - is for finding balance and peace

Play arborist with one of those kids Stihl or Husky chain saws :-)

I just like to climb - practice climbing techniques, take some photos, chill out, teach others to climb. I have a hammock ready to go next. My 2nd most favourite is problem solving getting to a place or navigating a start to end path I've mapped out.

I also like explorative climbs; climbing through 3 or so trees and descending by a cliff face to an inaccessible beach right in the middle of the city is probably my favourite.

Daylight savings just came here so night climbing is good fun too. Best getting a throw line in before it's too dark.

I don't understand the meaning of this.

Jokes aside - I'm with the Earth First Climbers Guild on this one. Their rule is that once beer or bud is in your system, you're done with climbing for the day. Seems like a good bright line rule.
