warm up your saw before you make that money cut !!

today >>> left the shop and got 2my climb around 8 orso looked at it from several angles, noted all interferances " a large stone dead maple removal with several expensive plantings below a fence and a propane bug zapper left in the frozen tundra of this back yard in saugaus mass, it was not rocket sience! take it down chunck it out . carful to not put to much stress on my climbing line or loweing point i wood let as many branches as i could fly , well the first limb i assend on was a sure shot i could send it with out putting this home owners property in any jeperdy ! note the saw was in the truck all night safely nestled in its saw box with a temp low of about 12 degrees <<< At this point in the am it may have been 25 degrees and warming. i reach for my saw and start to cut straiht through > i asume you know the different cuts that can be made that will land a branch were you want! well
my 200t wasnt ready for this money cut just yet i used my old stand by " no face cut no notch no snap, jus muscle throuh it let the saw do the work << its razor anyways and its only a 10 inch limb" well 3/4 of the way my saw chokes its not warm and the pelled down out of control norrowly missing each and ever said obstical . huh luck,, no harm no foul until next time,,,...

I think the MS 200 are a little slower in the cold. my company uses Husky and they too can be dogs when they first start up.
Well you leanr't a lesson, and like you said no harm no foul, and you won't let that happen again.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

Sometimes it just happens.
I under cut a branch a couple of years ago then cut through from the top and it peeled sending it down tip first where it took a bad bounce but didn't damage anything.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

Cut three sides then from the top, same as a bucking cut, for the limb to land as flat as possible.

Or bump the choke a few times for a quicker warm-up.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

Dude it's tree work if everthing went exactly as planned where would be the fun in that? Just today I was throwing about a 10 ft pole out of a pine. The saw hung up and I bent the bar tip yanking it free as it was falling. Sometimes the limbs peel sometimes they just snap if you scratch them. I always start small with experimental cuts just to see how the tree is going to behave. That also lets me know how my saw is cutting for the day. Have fun and be safe.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

Sounds like you simply forgot to warm'er up. That's all. I don't have a problem with my 200T in the cold, when I warm it up.

BTW. Any of you guys running winter grade oil right now?!

You're probably one of those guys that just fires up the truck on a cold morning (diesel never-the-less) and floors the gas pedal, roaring out of the parking lot. Oh, and the chipper? Full throttle even before you take your thumb off the Murphy switch!

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

im on winter mix, have been since novemberish, new jersey doesnt have predictable winters, first thing in the morning i start my saw up, even before i gear up, i let it sit and warm up for a couple of mins at least.

as far as luck goes, i may have more luck than talent, sometimes treework reminds me of pool, you just make that shot that makes everyone think you are better than you actually are, but somehow, that lucky shot, eventually repeats itself, again and again and again, til after a while, if youve been watching closely and learning from it all, its no longer luck, mistakes can be the best teachers

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

I start my 200t when i drop all my gear at the base of the tree, then i let it run while i inspect the area and plan my route in the tree. When going to make my first cut i normally give it a couple harty revs to see if it dies on me. If so i'll hit the o'l choke a couple times. Normally always works, but every situation is different.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

I usually let my saws warm up for 30-60 seconds. If really cold I will let them warm up longer, till I get god throttle response.

you lucked out and learned a cheap but important lesson.

Had a curling coach that use to tell me the more I practice the luckier I get. Funny how that works.

Yo Cash-Money

Look, you gotta make a front cut or just a line in front...Always. Cutting corners to make a job go faster or easier is how climbers find themselves hanging upside down in their harness or worse. Don't cheat your chunks. Always tie in twice. Warm up your saw. Oh and two words... Spell Check...

See you in the emergency room.

Ropeburn

P.S. YOU should never rely on YOUR muscle power.. I figure your "power" equates to that of a 10 year old girl anyway.

Hi RB,

Good to see a new poster on TB, welcome.

Lighten up a bit though. Jumping on people isn't appreciated here. Spell check is really a misnomer, it should be type-check because all of us are better spellers than typists.

Another thing---lay off the jabs at other folks. You'll find yourself on too many peoples welcome list which always leads to antagonism and tension. Your concluding comments sure aren't necessary. You can go back and edit them if you choose.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

I once read that "Experience is the acummulation of all the mistakes you have made" so chalk it up to experience..remember it...and warm your saw up next time.
And Ropeburn(I can pretty much figure how you got that name) listen to what Tom just said...
Tom, is it all right to link to the archives of that stone age ISA forum we tossed ideas and such around on back in the late '90's when computers where made of stone and Hi-Rangers were mounted on dinosuars(speaking of which I gotta start unstrappin the 'Ranger from the fossill tommorrow...)?

Yeah OK fine.. a little heavy on the tabasco I admit.

Seriously tho, cutting cookies off without doing anything to prevent the peel...rookie move.

Re: warm up your saw before you make that money cu

Kman,

Any links back to the Grandparent Arbo Forum [ISA] would be very welcome.

If anyone can figure out how to link to any of the Doug Mellor forum would be my hero for life.
