They put out there 2013 list and lumberjack came in 2nd to last just above a newspaper reporter. How's that make everybody feel? Personally I love climbing trees but feel we are severely underpaid for the amount of physical labor we put out, and were right up there with mechanics in our tool costs while all the guys sitting in the offices are raking in the money.

There is only a couple lumberjacks left. The rest of the loggers are equipment operators. How come all the bad jobs are fun?

The harder you work the less you get paid goes way back. The highest paid are the ones that need the most exercise. Weird world. Bid high work less.

I'm not putting much stock in this list. It has us 39 spots worse than garbage collector and 46 spots worse than janitor. Puuuhhhleeese. I've never in my life wished I was picking up other peoples' garbage, but I guarandamntee some garbage men have driven past one of my job sites and thought to themselves, "That looks sweet. Wish I could do that".

Also, the list puts Police Officer at 166 out of 200. Nice suburb near me starts new cops at $50,000, and following successful completion of a two year probationary period bumps them automatically to $72,000. Last year one of their officers had to shoot a dog. It was the first time one of their officers had discharged a weapon on duty in 24 years. Plus pension and insane health care. I happen to know there is a HUGE waiting list for this "crappy" job.

One of these officers is a good customer of ours. Interestingly, he lives in different nice suburb than the one he works for. You know why? The TAXES are too high in the one he works for! What a world.

I throw a spin on this- there's a town near me where the garbage men are all salary, benefits, vacation, pension, and yet they usually are done work by 10:00 am and most have second jobs. Hmmm...maybe there is something to it

I suppose a production faller probably falls into the lumberjack category. If I work 200 days this year (6.5 hr days note) I'll gross well over 100 grand. I know the yarding crews and operators don't do as well but they're paid very decently. There's a lot of things about logging and many other jobs that don't get quantified by a survey like this. Being out in the woods, seeing the wildlife, exercise, interesting things to be seen etc it's all worth a fair bit to me.

Still not sure what a lumberjack is in 2013.

If it's production hand fallers and toppers I'd guess there's less than 2,000 left in North America. But how many climbing arborists, 100,000? We should get on that stupid survey.

Then there are a rare breed like me who do both.

You really want to know why he doesn't live where he works?
Good chance people want to KILL him there!
Been there done that.
Enjoy the job you do, do the job you enjoy. Don't worry too much about what others like, do or make and YOU will be doing the job rated at #1.

P.S. Actuary? Are you kidding me, does ANYONE ever grow up wanting to be one of those! I'd rather fall out of a tree than do that.
