Very interesting video, but questionable practices

This video of a removal of a tree loaded with hardware is quite interesting. Sadly, a climber had his arm broken during the removal. Perhaps it was due to the cable as was stated in the video. However, work and safety practices demonstrated in the video might cause one to speculate otherwise.

There was pressure building from the get go. Once he really got his head around it, I think he realized it was grossly underbid, as suggested by the closing title. At that point people are now rushing to get it done. When that happens assumptions are made that will justify taking the quickest route possible.

I'm thinking some undercuts might have made things a great deal safer but geez...dealing with that much metal...i think just about anyone would cut corners. I would've turned that job down so fast.

5 days, I'd be at $12-15K. I like a challenge but you've got to get paid for it. The worst tree I've ever had to dismantle was 4' DBH Red Oak about 2' off the back of a house in Forest Hill, a neighbourhood in Toronto. Top had been blown out decades ago major limb over the roof, No crane access. and the path to the back was barely enough to walk through. The trunk had a 25' column of decay filled with mortar and bricks. the trunk took me 2 1/2 days itself to get down. I gave my boss an estimate of
$10-12K, he sold it for $5400 then had to up it to $7800. Still not enough. I think it came to 4 days all said and done.

Also, how does a barber chair hit your arm if it splits lengthwise? His left elbow would have to have been sticking waaay out when cutting from above.

Seems like there was decent room, I would have probably flopped it earlier with a super low face cut. Also, why were they cutting it up so small if they had a loader?

Definetly a time+material type of job!

forget cutting that up..
cut it as big as you can load and take it to the dump

also he didn't seem to have much remorse for killing the tree after he said it had "so much rot at the base" that "its got to come down"..
Ignorant... reminds me of a snapple lid that read "some doctors make the same mistakes for 30 years and call it clinical practice"
