Very Honest Arborist Podcast

We plan to have a diverse selection of ornamentals, veggie starts, trees, etc...

We are slowly building inventory, and my wife and I have looots of experience in running black market nurseries from back when that was worth it. We can definitely compete with home depot, walmart, and tractor supply.
You cannot compete with tractor supply, walmart or home depot on price. Not if you want to turn a profit.

But you don't have to. Not everyone who buys from you wants to go to home depot.

The big difference, aside from quality of plants, is the knowledge you have available to assist with your customers when they come to ask what would be a good tree for this spot. Then when you offer an actual tree and not a whip they are going to be even happier.

I don't ever compete on price because it is a race to the bottom. I can't win and neither can the clients who love our services. Instead I focus on what makes us different or better than the competition. The hard part is to highlight strengths without trash talking the competition.

Unless I get pissed off, then I don't give a shit.

"That said, maybe think outside the box and buy something that nobody else really has that gives you a slight niche. The crane has been great for a number of reasons in that vein."

I honestly would have said the same thing because it was truly a niche and great until it wasn't and isn't and is coming to a halt like hitting a brick wall at a full sprint. I truly hope each and everyone in this conversation, who's sharing such great insight has remarkable success and meets their goals. This is a pretty interesting thread to me. I enjoy the opinions. Thanks
