Unknown tree somewhere in the Olympic park

I see leaves, not cypress needles. I'm going to have to go with madrone ( Arbutus menziesii ), seeing as how the olympics is in their range.

Pretty trees!

Ahhhh Mark , that poor tree is lost ...

The alrgest Madrone tree in the world was in humbuldt county, until about four years ago when it blew apart.

As a kid i drove by this tree many times not giving it much thought.About five years ago , during Labor day weekend At my dads, I decided to take my cusin to take some pics of this magnificent tree for my archives. One year later when I decided to take Jerry B. to see it , it fell apart..

Heres a couple of pics.

Enjoy.

Awesome madrone that was, Greg.....

Check out this dead badboy I bid today....have yet to discuss options with customer..... The trunk is about 15 vertical feet down an appx 25 degree slope, and it has a 40 degree or so lean toward triple primaries, with a few branches actually over the plane of the wires....Dead, but looks to have just died...wood is very hard, and a bit brittle, but should be safe to climb and rig off as a last resort. I think we can set a high line in the fir and drift everything over, using the GRCS. If the brush needs to come out, we could attach it to a line tied off in the fir and sent out the neighbor's drive, and tighten it with various means which will lift the branches and wood if need be and allow them to speed line out.

I hope to get this rather challenging and spectacular job, do it in nice weather and film the whole process.

Sharpen up those spurs! That wood up top looks as hard as concrete. Minimal tie in as well. Maybe tie in to the smaller top if it is not in the way of the load lines.

I still see a bit of red there so you got some softer wood in the main trunk which is good. Is there any way to pull over the section near the wires?

You betcha, Jimmy errr "Paulaner"....I can only get the butt down in a marketable length though.

Franz, yep, we'll tie in to the vertical lead, and/or the top of the fir. All will be rigged off the fir w/GRCS. We'll have to face each cut away from the lifeline!! May need a side tag line to boost the initial movement the right way!!

I'll get Chapple, he'll do anything....remember the "Let's get Mikey" ditty from another era?

Customer thought the mess could stay on hill...I'm not so sure, plus it might be in our way...as well, it's prolly too steep to leave the wood. Plus DNR permit will be required...and it is great firewood or for lumber/crafts...

I told him $2800 plus or minus 600 depending on how it all goes down....it could go fast, but prolly won't and is high risk, high skill required...we deserve to be paid well. Methinx it'll happen... Time to buy a real video cam, eh?!!

Scott Baker alerted me to check the roots for fusillium (sp?) said he has seen madrones fail....yep, that we'd best do!!!that would not be a pretty sight...

here's Chapple, his climber Edwin, and Eli...we're 100 feet up in a sequioa in the UW Arboretum last Wed nite for Eli's 27th birthday....

Please say HELLO for me to Chapple, O.K.?
Frans

ps: I hate giving leeway to customers. After all it takes alot of risk (exposure) to do the job safely no matter how the job goes...

True Franz...but maybe the pwr co will trim a bit for us...maybe some brush can stay.....we'll see.

There may be a few cowboys around who'd tackle that tree...but noone in town that I know of has what we have: GRCS, Hobbs, chain saw winch, chipper winch...and some 5 competent climber buds up to the challenge, both aloft and below...even Scott Baker expressed an interest in helping.

Greg, up here a lot of madrones are declining...biotic issues mostly like smog, lawns, water, change....the homes adjoining that tree may not be all that old....it seems to have little canker...other than those problems, I don't think the decline can be linked to a specific disease. Some have had good results with mychorrizal inoculants...
