Unicender Set-Ups

I'm interested in seeing how people set-up their unicender for SRT, I have read some older posts and saw T.D.'s rig but wondered if anybody else has something to say on this and how many of you are working on SRT now.

I don't have the Uni yet but have been messing around now since TCIA with the Eddy on working srt and I have set up a RADS system like Tom showed at the expo. I've been working on a rope walker system in conjuction with the Eddy that seems to work well.

I'd like to see a video of this in action. Sure if you go to the web-site you see a 20sec (or so) video of someone hip throusting 6' off the gound and slowly coming down, but big deal. That isn't a way to sell.

I want to see someone in a "work climb" situation and really hitting some jumps/swings to work stations in a tree. And when it comes to the descent, I'd like to see a nice jump at least 20' away from the trunk pulled off!--That would tell me it is not like the Lock Jack and more like a V.T. (or any other friction hitch tied with a cord).

If I could see that. I'd be impressed and may think about it.

It's all single line. I can access and work off the same line with out having to worry about pulling so much rope through. I use the petzl ascenders currently with the Eddy. It's just something I've been playing around with lately. Plus there's no rope being ran through friction savers or natural crotches so it's easier on the rope.

Last weekend I was allowed to use SRT for the climbs in the Geezers. It worked as well in comp as it does in work-day climbing. It all comes down to the operator.

Getting swing/drops to work with the Uni is the same as with a hitch. A matter of practicing the 'hand' on the release. There was a place in the workclimb where I might have taken a swing/drop in a work situation. But...in competition I was concerned with missing the landing and loosing points so i didn't drop but i did swing.

Another HUGE advantage of SRT is the ease of redirecting. Like PUC says there is no friction too. Just thread the climbing rope around the tree.

"How are you finding it" means "what is it like."

He wants to know how you like working a big tree using your system.

I pruned big trees using SRT for about a year, which I liked. I still prefer DdRT for that controlled burn when decending.

Large canopies are no different. I just took Tom's advice and leave some extra rope in the bottom of the system so I can redirect if needed in the trees. I like the eddy so on limbwalks back in you can feed it like you would a prussik and walk out you fight the friction and finger the cam of it to let the slack through.

I can descend as fast as I dare without burning up a hitch using the Uni or Eddy. When I've tested the Uni on a fast long descent I'v e never found it to be too hot when I got to the ground. My first test is by touching it with my fingers then I bring it up to my cheek. It's never been too hot to touch.

FWIW My rumination was based on my experience SRTing with a Gri-Gri and my preference of a DdRT Hitch Climber setup.

Is the Uni really that fast and smooth? Were you allowed to use it when you competed?

In the footlock?? Please enlighten me on how that would work. Do you thread both lines through the device. I'm familiar with the unicender but I'm unsure how you reascend while working on a single line which I'm assuming is what we're talking about here.

Murph,

Instead of using a doubled rope in the Footlock event I used a single like normal. Well, normal for me I should say...

Yeah... he cheated, I saw him do it.

ermmm....would this work? Line tied off at base and just over the TIP is a pulley. The line goes through my grigri, back up to the pulley and down through a biner so I don't lose the end.
Does this system have a name -Elongated RAD perhaps-and more importantly what are the disadvantages?

I was at the AR event and can attest to the fact that it looked smooth when he climbed. I have used the petzel stop for decending and doing some big swings while descending in redwoods. The single rope part isnt an issue except there is less to tangle and less weight. Never used the uni but from wwhat Ive seen with tom it would work great for that.
