TreeStuff Party

Merle Nelson

Been here much more than a while
Location
SF Bay Area, CA
I attended a TreeStuff Party in Sebastopol CA yesterday. The best kept secret I have seen in a long time. I would have had no idea it was happening within 10 miles of my home if Lawrence, Phanner man here, hadn't told me about it days before.

It was amazing. Hosted by Chad Brey there are too many good things to say about it and too many people to thank for their contributions for me to really do it justice. Chad spent the day bringing his excellent teaching/instructing skills to bear in sharing tons of info even though I don't think he really planned to do that. A -1 Tree Service provided food for a great lunch, and the event happened on a great property that the owners generously let be used for the occasion.

TreeStuff sent along a huge duffle of gear to be handled and used. I was particularly interested in handling the new wide bridge ring, the Ariel Friction Brake, and trying out the MCRSaddle. Ohh, and the Sterling Rigging Sling, as well as getting to personally handle some of the tRex cordage in the form of a sling.

Lots of information was shared amongst the participants and I can only see repeat attendance at future TS Parties as being an extremely positive thing for participants and the industry as a whole.

Thanks to TreeStuff, Chad and all who made it possible to have this great experience. It was a huge contribution - keep it up.

Anyone interested in attending TS Parties, I think the best way to be informed about them at the present is through the TS Facebook page. I asked my wife to sign up for that and keep me informed in the future.

I agree Merle...I was able to test out a variety of gear and get face-to face feedback on how others have liked or not liked certain gear

The other cool thing is I got to run my SRT base and canopy TIPs by a few climbers and see if it is safe and how they do theirs.

The only thing I didn't get to do was play with Aptos or get the guy's name who has a nonprofit and teaches people around the world how to climb, specifically in rainforests and wildlife conservation

Well shoot I wish I would have known that was you while we were talking. I have always enjoyed your posts here and it makes a big difference to connect a face with the name. Thanks for pitching in pictures and info now.

I think Lawrence has that persons contact info.

If I could get his contact info, that would be great. I'm going LLC next year and will have my Arb cert - 10% of our earnings is going back into local and other California projects. We'll be doing hazardous trimming or removal, tree planting, and drought-tolerant / native landscaping for nonprofits or faith-based organizations. I'd like to get involved in one global initiative- it sounds perfect.

the guys name was J.R. Reed and his website is www.treemonkeyfun.com i think you should be able to get a hold of him through that. nice to meet you by the way. check out theschultzeffect.com for enough SRT info to make your head hurt ;)

Thanks for the SRT tips! Look forward to doing some testing tomorrow on different anchor techniques- without a crowd of people watching me flailing around.

it was a nice free form and free event. these sorts of thing should be supported and encourage not just because tree guys coming together, sharing and rec climbing (without fear of being ticketed) are good things but being able to touch, try on and see first hand how gear works is a luxury few of use are ever afforded. there is no REI for the tree guy.

JMerrit was nice also nice enough to drive up and showcase the eagerly anticipated Akimbo, i got to try it out and it was freaking sweeeeeet

yeah, i didnt get there till late. next time ill come up the night before or host the damn thing myself! i feel like i missed out on a lot of fun climbing. how do you guys feel about a 4x4 access only location:loco:? these events need to happen a lot more often!

Come on up to the beautiful state of VT. We have tons of 4x4 access only spots. Beautiful scenery, nice weather, some very large trees to climb. Camping at my place. Heck, my company will sponsor an event anytime up here. Something for you guys to think about. We have a TON of tree companies that are still clinging on there blake hitch around here. They could really use some good info on the modern techniques. They won't come to you, buy you could come to them!!

The hosted party was a great way to bring people together in an informal setting - all it required was a liability waiver.

Looking forward to more in the future - I like the camping idea. Make a weekend out of it! For those of us that aren't champion climbers, maybe we can shine in our BBQ skills [emoji91]

@ROYCE - anyone can host through TreeStuff. Just go to their Facebook page, contact them about hosting one, and they send you a huge duffle of the latest and greatest.

Jaime I think 4x4 access only would work fine for a TS Party.

Some of us coming longer distances might still prefer to come in an economy car but, I'll bet we could find someone coming with a 4x4 that would be willing to make a scheduled extra trip or few in and out in exchange for extra $$$ to buy the latest climbing device. :)

I spaced posting about the Akimbo in this thread as I had already posted about it being at the party in its own thread. But, it was incredible to have it there and see it run a bit by the man himself. I always prefer seeing a tool or piece of equipment being operated at or near its optimum to my initial flailings. That way I can see the best of what I could get out of it.

Additionally to hold it in my hand and have some of the adjusting finery explained was fun and beneficial.

This tool has a very short learning curve to set for different ropes and climbing style preferences.

I applied to have a treestuff party in eastern Ontario....still on the waiting list. It would be a great chance to see some of their shiny gear!!!!! Lots of treestuff clients around here!

Great feedback Merle! I am hosting a Treestuff party this Saturday in Longmont, Colorado. I'm super excited and based on the amount of people who have RSVP'd it should be really fun. People around here are already talking about trying to make it an annual thing!

@LandonPainter. When? Where? What time? Is it too late to get in on the fun??? I would love to swing down. I am supposed to do a prune in the AM but if it goes all day I am totally in!

Magnum, we will be there all day. Absolutely join us. This sat July 16 starting at 10am. The address is 12885 N 115th st, Longmont, Co. If you get a chance RSVP on Treestuff's website, all the info is on there. Cheers!
