Trees of Saskatchewan

Im having a real hard time finding any ifo as in pictures of the trees here in Saskatchewan so I can id whats what if anyone could point me to a good book with pictures (this would help) my biggest thing is not knowing what type of Maple grows here and I am having a hard time between the maple and these poplars, I have cut some wood that has a red ring in the wood? what would this be? any help is appriciated.

thats the tree allright but is it the younger trees of this species that would have the red ring?

RC Hosie, Native trees of Canada, great book.

That's probably the best one I can think of, good quick recognition section. Some of the audobon books are good too, but that's probably one of the better ones.
By the way, I am a native of Canada, but I'm living in New Zealand for now.
