I think you’re right. I’ve seen a couple of those sprout around here too. They’re a unique species, they germinate almost overnight, and then they reach maturity in less than a week. Once they do, they don’t seem to grow another inch, although they do occasionally, at random, sprout new branches.

In the swamps of the South Carolina Lowcountry. I think I know it. Definitely know it if it belongs to the leaf shown, but not sure it does. There were some leaves below it that looked similar to gum trees.

It’s the only species that can be re-assembled in a different location than its origin if you label all the pieces. I haven’t dismantled one yet...yet.
