that's a pretty good size sassafrass for around here. they grow like weeds here so most people just cut them down. if you can find a small one, pull it up by the root, strip the bark off the root, and it smells just like root beer.
Wash the roots, peel the bark and make a tea. It is supposed to be a spring tonic that thins the blood from winter. Also a carcinogen from what I'm told, but what isn't anymore.
