Trees from a distance

This one should be easy, so no clues, at least to start with. This tree has been in the ground for 6 years, and it is about 8" DBH x 25' tall. It was 1.5" B&B when I installed it.

Acer rubrum.

Nope. Look closer at the leaf arrangement. Sorry about the image quality. Here are some leaf-less photos of the State Champ(s). Unfortunately the homeowner wants them removed. I have spent considerable time trying to talk him out of it... His Father was a nurseryman, and he planted them, so I do have an angle!

This tree's name indicates a similarity to another completely unrelated tree

How about Pignut Hickory (Carya glabra)?

'Carya' in ancient times translated as 'walnut'.

No... Awesome guess based on the clue, though.

BB was warm in regard to native range.

(PS - If you look closely at the original pic, you can see the opposite leaves, sort of stacked up along the young branches and twigs.)

¡Si! You got it. The 'name' clue is that Cercidiphylum japonicum is named that because the leaf is very similar to Cercis (Redbud).

The growth rate and mature size clues were intended to throw you off, since C. japonicum is supposed to grow at a medium rate (my little specimen is growing extremely fast), and to a height of 40-60' ...the State Champ is quite a bit bigger than most ID sources say they will grow.

Nice work!
