i don't think the leaves are heart-shaped enough to be redbud and the fruit/flowers don't look right. of course Tom you do live in Asheville right? maybe you have some inside info
speaking of which, how's the purple beech tree doing at the Biltmore? last time i went it looked stressed. and I noticed they took down all the big tulip poplars along the entrance.

See attachment for answer. I took the picture at the Arboretum near Lake Powhatan. If you ever get a chance to go there they have an experimental forest. Arborer's turn.

Wow, the fruit looks nothing like S. japonica. And the whole thing looks like a Parrotia except for the fruit. That was a good one!
