I do believe you are in a Black Cherry (P. serotina), not a Chokecherry (P. virginiana).

Chokecherry is generally a multi stemmed short tree or shrub, rarely more than 20 or 30 feet tall, whereas Black cherry is a tree, sometimes reaching sizeable dimensions.

there is no way in hell that is a choke cherry.

and that is the problem, too many people out there are using the common name choke cherry, for black cherry, prunus serotina.

you were definitely in a black cherry and that picture you posted was a black cherry.

I fully believe the Nebraska state champion chokecherry has be falsly ID'd. It is a prunus serotina.

I think the person submitting that tree, also incorrectly uses the name chokecherry for a blackcherry. They then looked up the latin name for chokecherry and submitted it. Since not too many black cherry trees out there, no one knew the difference, or something like that.

I wrote to the Nebraska Tree Champion board and asked them to check.

No way that is a chokecherry, no freakin' way.

Id freak? I just throw stuff out without rhyme or reason, I really am not terribly familiar with stuff outside this zone. Although I id'd a 2' hackberry sapling the other day after having only really seen and climbed one big one, was pretty thrilled with that!

This new one magnolia acuminata? Can't really see the branch/twig structure so I'm goin on bark!
