Here's another shot. There are a few clues here: twigs, a younger stem behind the old one on the left, and even some fruit hiding in there!

If you could see this in flower you would get it instantly, along with many non-arborists. It's very showy and quite fragrant. This species happens to be white but there are other very common colours...
 
Actually, no. But I can see why the clues were leading you there.
Different family. The most common flower colour for this genus is purple.
I think the branching arangement is worth checking out...
 
hmmm, so many clues but still hard to get....

if i didn't see the picture and listened to the clues, I'd say Crape Myrtle.

the small stem behind the big trunk has bark like a flowering cherry, like a weeping cherry...
