I wouldn't recommend it as an id guide. It is an amazing book if you already know what you're dealing with.
 
okay quercus glauca--also know as blue japanese oak or i cant remember the other name, but they can grow like this form. any others i will have to pull all my books off the shelves.
 
Nice job Starlet! I'll take it. It's a Blue Oak, Quercus douglasii.
It says other common names are Californis Blue Oak,Iron Oak, Mountain White Oak, and Mountain Oak.
The number of blue oaks has decreased because there has been no natural regeneration. It is not considered endangered, however, because of its wide distribution across the region.
Their are so many different species of oaks out west it blows my mind.
Cool lookin tree though!
 
that is a gorgeous tree, i love the shape and it is true about the blue oak/ well the actual blue oak alot of cross breeds. i do not have any ready available pictures, at least none that are not really easy, so if someone has some please feel free. i have to get some more harder ones for all you bright guys out there. thanks matt
