it does look like clethra, i have not seen a clethra though with that big of trunk.

The specimen in the first photo is probably as big as you will ever see. Also very difficult to find in nurseries (at least in my experience). Here's a second photo of it in the shade, where it is much happier!

btw: did anyone see the file name on the first photo?
