Pomegranate?

X, the problem with this particular one is that it's an ugly little stressed out shrubbish thing in a crappy spot. As much of an interesting tree as it may be, it's fugly and weak looking with very few 'tree' characteristics. Sorry to be blunt.

ha,

, okay. Only one i've ever seen, so i wouldn't know. They can actually look like a tree then?

Sorry, X, I didn't mean to belittle the obscurity of the tree. That was indeed a good one, just not one that I've seen, and a bushy little thing at that!

Here's a toughie. This is the only photo I have of it, and the odds are that no one will get it without some hints.

Alnus incana

Although it has an Alnus look about it, it reminds me of certain Quercus species.

it really just looks like a maple to me.

Like an old Acer rubrum.

but i know it can't be that simple, so i don't know.

Is it an Acer?

wow, good job climbncut.

the big fruit was a decent hint. "sour grapes".

but really, not too much big fruit here in the north east.

Although I've never seen one that big my first thought was mulberry. After you gave the hint about the fruit I really looking at the trunk I figured it was "hedge apple." Not sure if there are any that big around here but there are some nice ones. Here's a pic of one with a really straight trunk

I cant believe it! it was the first goddamn thing I thought of when I looked at it!

just goes to prove- Always go with your first instinct even though you know its more than likely to be wrong 95% of the time.

See if this works...

Ulmus species? I also have a 2nd thought if that is wrong.

Yes, it is a pignut hickory. One of my favorite tree's around and the biggest of any in my yard. This tree is massive and would be a perfect candidate for a hardcore tree house. It didn't lose or break a single branch when it was loaded with ice last winter. Awesome rec climbing tree too.
