Trees from a distance

hey i think i may have it now.

i was thinking that bark was kinda rough looking, now looking at it more, it might be smooth and it's just the color of the algae and staining on it that makes it look that way.

then it kinda makes sense with the end of the limbs with all those small twigs like that.

so, looking at it with smooth bark, it looks like it could be a Beech.

since you said, latin name only, I'll pick:

Fagus sylvatica.

If you hadn't asked for that, I would have said, Fagus americana.

now tell me I'm right....

I could see where that had the huge sassafrass look, I thought it was a good choice when I saw your post.

I think there was one on trees from a distance in the past.

Ok, I'm jumping in here again, hopefully it provides more than one guess worth of entertainment.

I have to start standing back further to take my pics! Will got it. I used to drive by this tree in awe all the time, and my company got some work on the property and I actually got to prune it, I was honored. :-) The wood is really tough on those, well formed!

It's by far the biggest I've seen personally, but I believe I saw one on a news clip from the Arnold arboretum that looked more than worthy of a high tie in and rope and saddle.

So hard to see the leaves! ...I see the compound leaves in the left mid-ground area, so I get what Jeff is saying, but I would have to say that the bark and form look more like J. cinerea. ???
