Thuja what Jeff?

Well, Tom is in the right genus with his first guess of Chamaecyparis.
Do you want to try for the species (it's not nootkatensis) and/or variety?

The photo isn't showing its branch tips of yellow-coloring very well.
The tree is only 3 ft. high.
I 'rescued' him from neglect at the back of a plant nursery.
I planted him near his 180 ft. redwood tree brothers and he's doing really well now.
He'll probably reach 40ft maybe 60ft. at maturity.

Hint: There's a reason why I'm referring to him as a 'he'.

And so it is, Xman!

The variety name is: 'Golden King'

Good guesses all around, everyone.

Especially for this tree which is often confused for Thuja and mis-labeled as such by the nursery industry.

You're up, Xman.

I've got a good one! just took the picture tonight at an estimate.

I'll post after the family goes to bed, 10 or 11pm tonight.

Some kind of a Buckeye (Aesculus or in the family Hippocastanaceae) ?

Is the shell of the fruit smooth or spiny?
My computer is terrible at zooming in.

Holly - no poking was intended.

Jeff guessed Thuja as well.
And Tom and Xman were on their way in that direction with second guesses of Arborvitae.

You were in the ballpark ...
and like I said this tree is often misidentified by lots of folks.

I never would have gotten that one if Diane hadn't given some clues.

Diane, not a horsechestnut or buckeye, not in the family.

just some text clues for now, then later a picture of fruit upclose later.

relatively smooth fruit, smooth skin except for the odd "petals" still on the end of the fruit. Fruit stay fairly hard while ON the tree.
