It's called a rope clutch.

somekind of progress capture device then?

I'll need some enlightening too. I get the point of a progress capture device or clutch as a pre-tensioner, but what about when it comes time to let the load run on a butt hitch? I guess you disengage it manually after applying tension to let it run?

Looks like another Harken winch. Nice.

Jomoco-

I bet you got an education on the Skylanders character by the same name! It's a kids video game that my seven year old plays too much.

Looks like a fairlead as well as a brake/clutch.

So this looks cool but I'm guessing even bigger and HEAVIER than the GRCS? Hope it comes with it's own wheely cart/case.

Need more info.

Nope, jomoco is an abbreviation of Jon Mooring Company.

Thanks grover. I should have been more clear. Never in a thousand years did I think a thread on this site would involve that stupid game!

Lol, guess I'm getting old and senile!

Thanks Grover, I haven't been around kids cartoons for some time..obviously!

Im willing to bet its a lock, so you can quickly and easily lock the load off.
Its called redunancy.
As far as it being a device for tensioning the rope ?
Isnt that what the winch does already ?
Wouldnt really make sense to have a tensioning device right in front of the winch drum as you could just turn the winch handle and accomplish the same thing.
This leads me to believe its a brake/load lock of some sort.

That black thing looks easily broken with a log smashing into it.
