I like competition.
In fact given a choice as to having competition in a market and not having it, having essentially a monopoly instead, most would choose to have some form of competition.
The GRCS, as awesome as it is...lets face it is a sailng winch. It's been converted and put into production for tree work.
I think its an awesome piece of gear and would love to have one myself, but correct me if I am wrong, did Greg Good invent winching in trees.
Ill go out on a limb(lollol) and say Im pretty sure he did not, in fact Im pretty sure he was not the first person to use a converted sailing winch even. What he did do, was be the first to produce a commericaly viable sailing winch converted for tree work.
This precludes any other company from ever using sailing winches as the basis for a tree winch ? I would hope not.
People dont seem to get too upset about all the different types of Porta Wraps available now, they are all blatant rip offs of the original idea, yet they are all accepted now.
As far as them having to go back to the drawing board ?
It may not be perfect, but having never used one, or even having read the testimony of a person who has, its hard to pontificate on its efficacy.
I do think, judging from the Facebook page, that the makers might be European ?

you're right, people have been using sailing winches and bollards long before the portowrap and GRCS came to market....but in the case of the GRCS, Greg was the first person to put his neck and personal and financial investment on the line, at the risk of people getting killed, to make the winch system applicable and available as an Arborist product.

Home made stuff for personal use is all good and well but does not carry even a fraction of the risk and responsibility as does making a product available to the masses.

What more, its hardly just a sailing winch that straps to the tree....there's clearly much thought and time went into why it holds that position when it has 2 tons bouncing around on the other end of the line. Not to mention the interchangeable aluminum Bollard....again, didn't just happen by chance. Things always seem so obvious, after you've seen them.

If you discard the ropeclutch gimmick on the t rex, then there doesn't appear to be an ounce of originality about it.

Call it competition if you want, but in my mind its like running 25 miles a marathon only to have someone else join in the race at the 26th.

Read the life stories of Copernicus, Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Goodyear.

Then decide how fair life treats original thinkers who give their all and still get the short end of the stick?

I cheer every original thinker whose labors are rewarded, and Greg is no exception. More power to him, and you Reg.

It takes a certain degree of ruthlessness to succeed in the world of business. I suspect it was the same in every century both then and now.

Forget about all the time Greg spent driving around living in hotels showing the GRCS to people, selling it, winching up his pickup.

Well said Reg, there is a big difference in competition and carbon copy's.... The point of competition IMO is creating different products that usually do the same type of job but there needs to be diffferent features that offer advantages over other similar products.......originality is what makes this world succeed. If every truck manufacturer created the same exact vehicle what would be the point?

Which MFR will be the first to develop a powered Rope capstan with remote control to keep the rope man safely out of the DZ?

Slip of the tongue Tom!

I love women, and have worked with some very good and talented women groundies.

Though no super star climbers yet like Frax and her light saber!

[/ QUOTE ]just use a redirect block at the tree base, no remote necessary to keep groundies safe.

I'm in a customer's backyard. No trees around my target tree of sufficient size to anchor my Hobbs/GRCS to that can support a 1K load, only the base of the target tree.

How's a redirect going to work Sean?

If you look up you will see ingenuity at work Jomo. Instead of waiting for someone to build it for you why don't you build it yourself.

I've got other projects to spend my dwindling savings on Cre.

I've got my Hobbs, and a list of veteran ropers thank you!

That hitch mount could be bent in a heartbeat with a serious load.

I'm shocked they didn't configure 90 degrees off their present load axis so it would have to drag the truck forward or backward with a serious load. Atleast you could chock all 4 tires so it stays put.

Berry berry bad engineering!

Now to get that truck through a 3 foot gate, hmmm....

So why is the bullrigger $400?
tongue.gif

It's a complete backing plate too, with the loops, pigtails, etc. I don't have one, nor need one, but just an observation.

That is a rediculous question, the bull rigger is a functional tool, not just a mount for a tool. The bull Riggers are cnc cut and completely welded and come with a 20,000# mounting strap as well as a kerf bracket....its much more than a couple of pieces of square tubing welded to a plate....
