Treemotion mods

I have one pice of shock cord passing horizontally across the back pad. I can trap my webbing sling and figure of eight underneath this, also preventing things from flopping around.

I rather like silent climbing, not announcing my whereabouts by clinking and clonging around the tree.

In your picture I am seeing a real mess of gear which you carry on your saddle.
Maybe I am just another 'West Coast' climber but....
Dont you get caught up moving through brush with all that 'gear' attached to you?

What do you mean? Tangled? On what... brambles?

Me, a mess?

What's it for you then? Two krabs and a figure of eight?

As I say, I think it's very personal, but all the same: How much you need depends on the type of work you do. But all the same, I don't think it's be wise to skimp on kit just to go light at all costs.

It is very personal. I did not mean for my question to venture into what a climber should or should not climb with.

Sorry if I came across as meaning that.

What I mean to say, and this is a personal preference, is that I do ALOT of tree pruning. So for me, a simple clean saddle with little gear hanging off of it is optimal for me-----I am continually working though dense canopies.

My personal preference is to have exactly what I need for a paticular job, no more or no less.
I respect the climber who can jump up and, with the gear already installed on their saddle, handle any job which is required.
For me, I need to see the job ahead of time, gear up for it, and then whip it out.

So, my personal preference is to stay light, and only have what I need for that paticular job..

I DO NOT believe in fighting through a project with unappropriate gear just because I am familiar with it.
I have the luxury of picking and choosing my jobs and gearing up for each one.

Fair enough, Frans. I hear where you're coming from. I was joking before. I just find that I tend to forget just that tool. Or it only occurs to me once I'm aloft. Or the situation changes.

But essentially I agree. I will gear up if required or take less for a simple situation.

But I struggle to take much less than in the pic above. Thanks, Tockmal.

you must have a real good map in your head of where all the kit is on your harness.

The other day, at work, I started climbing with:

a butterfly II;
one 20m rope;
a 3m strop with a Vt and pulley;
a silky gomtaro;
a 1.5m webbing sling;
a spare karabiner;
a spare krab with an ISC pulley attached;
and an eye-to-eye tenex (to lengthen the pitifully short saw strops they give us).

All the other climbers found this hilarious as they'd never seen someone with so much gear on.

I despair, I really do.

I have to admit in all fairness that just yesterday I could have really really REALLY used a sling with captive eye biner to cinch up a small load.

I guess I just get impatient and dont want to have stuff hanging off my saddle. I like to be able to slip between narrow crotches of branches, and move around in the canopy.
If I was a young buck, I prop. would not even notice the added bulk of stuff on my saddle, but hey, just getting my fat a** to finish a pruning job without coming down to the ground for a break is a major achievement!
(my last job is coming to mind right now....)

hey mark,
thanks for posting the pics! the sheer potential for variety of ways to set up the tm is amazing - i'm a little daunted.

i'd best get to it then..
thanks,
k.

I destroyed my caratool yesterday so that I would never attempt to climb with it again.(I admit I was angry at the time) It hooked little branches 3 different times yesterday whiole I was in some thick mesquites. I really liked using them for my chainsaw but Im afraid that after yesterday...im totaly done.
Other than that, I still love my TM
Anyone else experience this?
Peace

For me it really depends which side I have the Carrytool on. Actually it's a Black Diamond Clipper, which I prefer to the Carrytools. I'm OK with it on my left side, on my right it tends gets snagged.

I suppose this is because you tend to orientate the same side of your body forwards most of the time (as in left vs. right. Not back vs. front... I tend to go front first most of the time... unless very confused!).

On the othere side I use a Trango thingygummy, can't remember the name, which I hang the chainsaw off in the "parked" position, with the lanyard attached at the rear of the harness. I like it because it's very low profile and doesn't snag braches.

Kathy, don't be daunted. You're a big girl and more than able to handle this, you're not fooling me! The nice thing, in my mind, is it really does what you want. If you're MB don't add on anything, just use the original two gear loops. That'll be fine for your fig' of eight (not being sarcastic here, but I don't think there's an extreme risk of seeing MB in a tM any time soon).

On the other hand if you decide to load up your harness with a plethora of bling, your can do that, too.

Hey Mark,
As a matter of fact I am just a little bit jealous. I feel there are a great number of uses for that little trinkit and I'm chomping at the bit to get a few as soon as they are available. You guys have all the cool stuff. I have to go wipe the tears away now. Be good.
ps My son has been talking about the future possibility of coming over to Switzerland and learning great things.

Thanks for all you do,
Bruce

Well actually, Bruce, I'm rather expecting to see the whole lot of you over here next summer. Then there'll be no need to shed any tears, because we can weight you down with all kinds of shiny bits'n'pieces. How about it?!

Love to all your end.

M.
