I'd like to build a 6x6 ford f550 with a chip box narrow enough to fit between two fence posts, but can carry the same load as a large chip truck.

That sounds like a great set up. You gonna ride on yards? Maybe you could remove a dually to make it narrower.

Here is my big set up and I also have an old f600, real light, with a bc1250/115Perkins dsl.....

This is our current chip truck. '96 F350 single axle, 460 engine with an ez dumper on a flatbed. The dump has 1.5 foot pressure treated sides and our chip box slides in between the sides and rests on the lip of the dump. Attaches w/ bolts and wing nuts.

And this is the big one we're building. 96 F800 with a cummins. 17 cubic yard capacity box with removable top. The hoist should be moved and set by the end of the week then it's time for some paint.

nice looking setup tree vet, nice truck blakesmaster did you build the removable top with the vents? nice setup being able to take the top off so you can use it to haul dirt etc.

Re: Tree Truck set-ups. Let\'s see what you\'ve done.

Here's how I roll.

Everything but the saws and gas and oil fit in the boxes on both sides. GRCS, Wraptor, climbing/rigging, pole tools, etc.

Rakes/shovel/fork on chipper, ladder on top when necessary,

I'm planning on chopping down the chip box this winter.

No, what I want to build is a dually with a second axle. I'm not sure, I should find and f550 measure it, but I think they're 93" wide, which is the same width as our new mini crane.

here is one of mine.

Nice rig. Signs are very prominent. Do you still have the truck in the avatar too?

Re: Tree Truck set-ups. Let\'s see what you\'ve done.

Thanks, man. I really like this box too. I didn't build it, bought it off a guy in CT having a going out of business sale for 2500 bones. MUCH cheaper than having my welder do it himself. If you look at the pics, right above the vertical steel reinforcements is where the top separates. It's a little low for hauling firewood but perfect for sand or stone. A good all around box if I must say so myself.

What's your capacity now? what are you going for? usually people want more capacity.

Re: Tree Truck set-ups. Let\'s see what you\'ve done.

I wonder how much company recognition and calls occur with signage readable from passing cars. Not that people will call 'cause they see a truck with a sign, but they see a recognized truck around town, or in their neighborhood. If potential customers drive by, but don't see anyone to talk to (say you're working in the backyard), and there's nothing on the truck, or just a name but no phone number, it would seems to be a disadvantage.

Brendon, you've got a much nice truck than me, but its anonymous. How come no signs? You get all the work you want without them?

I went for as large as I could on my chip truck to advertise.

Re: Tree Truck set-ups. Let\'s see what you\'ve done.

That big signage just has to bring work Southsound. Up until recently that has never been a worry to me. The economy has slowed all tree work around here along with the holidays. I have always wanted to attract a specific client....one with more money than the others, so I just go with a small decal and a somewhat unusual color (an orange with extra red, an off the shelf premixed equipment color) to give immediate recognition in my little niche area.

Now they probably see my trucks and say...."damn there is that more expensive tree service than most others" and it is likely a negative in today's economy. Here is my other rig. When they get faded paint or real dirty we just mask em up and roll em. End product is a consistent appearance on everything.

Re: Tree Truck set-ups. Let\'s see what you\'ve done.

My capacity? No idea......7-8 yrds? Chips don't stack to the top so it's just a big wind sail otherwise. It's going to be lower, but raising the tailgate, capacity should stay the same. Plus I want it to fit in a garage at some point.

Never got work from a direct correlation from my signs. I had some on there are one time. People aren't gonna drive by and right down your number from your sign, from what I've experienced. If your in a neighborhood they'd mine as well just walk over to you. Only person called me directly from a sign on my truck was a guy looking for a job. My works word of mouth/ part time as I also work part time for another company.
