removed a Rhamnus purshiana, better known around here as a Chittum tree today. Three codominant stems, cracked into three pieces down through the stump. Now, there was a obviously a large fissure creating a void, included bark and all that good stuff, but, look at the pic...

doesn't that look like the tree started growing new root tissue along the top of the ram's head there? Is that something some species are able to do? i thought the specialised tissues were pre-programmed... that the cambium layer on the trunk would simply produce xylem and phloem, branch and trunk tissues, maybe the occasional latent bud..
here's another pic (attached).

Speelyei,
They look very much to me to be adventitous roots.Possibly from induced primordia by division of parenchyma cells.(Angeles et al.,1986)

Nice pic interesting stuff.

I have seen this before in trees where there are viods, and then filled in with debrie adventitious roots. I think it is alot like over mulching a tree and new roots come out in the mulch. nice pics by the way.
