TREE-E-MOTION

The title of this post really sounds fitting to me since all lot of emotions were dug out by Treemotion saddle. Pure coincidence, and I was just itching for a chance to say "YO! This is how I feel". What I have to say really has nothing to do with any equipment and that is for sure. You can disagree with me and don't think I don't learn from those who do.

Treemotion = Tree-e-motion. Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Yes, I am going to be here awhile and want to thank those who at least listen. If you don't agree or think I am wrong and a idiot, please take the time to let me know.

Humans are an emotional entity, I usually operate off a three main emotions: Passion, anger and love. I believe this is typical in all humans to some extent. If you don't agree with this ( out of respect for Mr. Chisholm I won't call you a liar or a fool) but I would have to say you are in denial. We have no choice we are human, some might control their emotions better than others but that don't change much. If you are saying to yourself right now " this guy is a nutjob", you are correct. But that don't change much either. If you don't express emotion in everything you do, you are not alive. That you can't change. I think the term for anyone without emotion is "psychopath".

So with that being said now I can get on. First of all I would like to apologize if I have offended anybody. Yeah right! No way. If I offended you and you didn't stick up for yourself then what can I say. This is a forum speak up! But seriously sometimes I let MY emotions completely take over and that can be unfair. I don't want to "start a fight" but you can't argue with a good argument.

I have been doing this work long enough to call my self an expert and probably would touch on master. Even a master has stuff to learn. The fact that I don't have certification or much formal training in my field has little to do with the fact that I am, in fact, an expert. If you disagree just explain why. Like I said there are 3 sides on the coin , they can all make sense.

Armed with my experience and emotion I make this very general statement about this industry; "What the $#@!?". It is more of a question than a statement but it pretty much sums my feelings. Please note that this comes from a person who really does see the 3 sides. (at least I feel as though I do) If you see another side you should speak up. If you can't see it my way, his way and your way well I guess that is called tunnel vision and as far as I know that is "not good"

It is true the with the nature of the forum things can be easily taken out of context. Don't think that I am just a whiner who just wants to poke fun and criticize. I know I hit some people over the head and will most assuredly try to be more... uhm understanding? But I will call a shovel a shovel under any circumstance.

Just to bring up one topic that has my emotions going is how so many of us are so judgemental of others who do this work, I believe you refer to most of them as "Hacks". It looks like some of you really think that you are the only ones who are allowed to operate. I tell you this, if you put a picture up of 3 guys roping down a limb and say they are hacks, well that doesn't prove anything. First of all I can never tell what is going on just by pictures. Its like doing drive by estimates. Honestly, if you see someone out there doing bad work it really is none of your business. Its not your job and if you bid on it and didn't get the job and then you find out that it was done by someone under your level-that is called the customer's prerogative. Besides it never is as bad as some of you make out.

My first job in this field was with TreeCo down in S. Delaware. Hey Danny, do you know how many times I almost got killed, killed somebody, or destroyed your expensive property? Yes I am sure you know of some of some but not all. Danny tried to do good work and mostly did but the rest of his co was nothing but danger and guys making mistakes all over. His partner ran my over once and was always running things over. To me that is a hack. That's the truth there Danny, I was lucky to make it out alive. I like you and all but that don't mean I will never piss you off. Back then he would top a tree, I don't know now. Depending on the circumstance I would too. Neither of us are hacks.

I though Danny was a good guy back then, not to say he was not a [censored], he was and still is it appears. He had alot a patience and tried hard to be the best he could be in every aspect of his business. But we all know how a lot of important things are swept under the carpet because you can't be perfect.

I have worked with a lot of Certified guys and I have to say alot were quite incompetent. It hurts my ears to hear one of them rattle off ansi standards and other guidelines but they really had no heart in this business. They try to tell me stuff I allready know is B.S. They run around the job in a panic looking for their hardhats and only bring confusion and contempt and try to outwit. I am not talking about every certified guy out there.

It really doesn't matter if some hack messes up trees. No one's company is perfect. If you are really concerned about other company's work you should attempt to tell them so. If you see someone operating in a manner unbecoming to you should speak up to them, not me. Then you can post how you really helped out. Not by making fun of them. If they take offense to your meddling well that's because it really is none of your business.

As far as hurting trees- so what? There are tons of trees being planted by all sorts of organizations. Me for one. I think if you really want to save all the trees you should marter your life. Besides it is all about money anyway. If you don't like to see hacks drop your prices so the not-rich have acsess to your skills.

This is only the start. Ben.

I definitly think you are in the wrong industry.

"As far as hurting trees- so what?"

"It really doesn't matter if some hack messes up trees. No one's company is perfect"

"Hey Danny, do you know how many times I almost got killed, killed somebody, or destroyed your expensive property"

"Armed with my experience and emotion I make this very general statement about this industry; "What the $#@!?". "

wow...

Re: Spam

I have to much time on my hands? What about the spy posting songs he made up. I have time for what I want.Don't you?

What I gather from arbor101 and Steve Bullman is either they live in a perfect world(not my cup-o-t) or they are robots which is not for me either.

Do NOT think that you comments faze me. I am not asking you to agree, but I only speak from what I have seen and know. Which is why I keep talking and your comments don't bother me, I only wish it weren't so one sided. Why don't you ask me why I feel this way. If you don't care then YOU STFU. If no one pays attention to me I will shut up myself, its not like I want to WASTE my time.

Actually, I kinda took this week off to, rest, clean up my spread(its big) for fall, and to reflect. Next week is going be tough.I do this about every other month sometimes more. It is nice to be self sufficient, excuse me for now I have to go and put the inspection stickers on my truck.100% LEGALLY. After that I guess my time will be filled with work, which I actually do. Maybe I will leave you my web address so you can hear what my customers are saying about me. That, I care about.

By the way Mr. spy guy, thanks for sticking that in my head.
And, No there is no B.S. here, that is why alot of people don't like me. The truth hurts and it hurts me too. I think B.S. is a certified arborist charging 400.00 to hedge a ro of yews that are 12 feet long and 4 feet high while he wears a hard hat and only takes off 4 inches. So again What the$#@!

Hey Ben,

Good to hear from you! I believe you worked for us in 1989 or early 1990 when you were about 18 years old. As for tree topping, yes we did top trees when we first started out in 1987 but we quickly learned better and both owners became certified arborist about mid 1990.

Good to hear you are still in the biz, I think!

Yes, I'm ashamed!

It was a local extension agent who put me on the path to learning about trees and getting my CA back in 1990.

Oh heck... let's switch gears to a few things he said that are worth elaborating on.

For example, the concept of expert of master.

I don't know where most tree workers are here in relation to mastery, but I've always considered that mastery to the level of expert or master cannot be attained in less than 7 to 10 years. That's at least the minimum benchmark. And that's striving toward standards and knowledge as is proceeds from masters and experts.

One other facet was reducing prices so more people could afford services.

In my ears, that is rediculous.

Generally, I try to help people find out "how to" get the money or "how to afford" the service. In 90% of cases where I meet people who can't afford my service at that moment, its evident, that they have the resources to get the money without borrowing. They can do a garage sale of junk they don't need, they can reduce their Cable service for less TV shows. They can save a little money each month over a year and do it that way - but in most cases, they have a way.

Reducing prices in our industry can bring LESS quality tree care, because less income can mean less finances for education, books, seminars and CDs.

Come on! you don't think 400.0 for a little hedge is excessive. And as far as suggesting a yard sale to a customer: and you people think I am nuts. I would tell you to get the hell of my property or knock you off of it. That is absurd. You have a lot of balls on you my friend. I thought I had heard everthing. When I am done here I will go back to reality and tell of the wonderful fantasies I have heard uttered by YOU! " hey lady, can't afford to take care of that tree? sell your T.V. Besides you can't make much with a yard sale, usually a couple hundred.

I don't drive around in a brand new yellow Land Rover like the guy who charges 400.0 for a hours worth of work.He gets one every six months.

I think it has been a little longer than ten years but it does get fuzzy.

Re: Spam

I just accidently deleted my last post, good for you, it was the longest one yet. Bad for you, it went into a little detail about why I feel like I do.

Now that you know how long I have been around doing tree work ( probably not as long as you) and the fact that I seem succesful and compentent; Why don't you answer this question? Is 400.00 to much to charge for 1 hour trimming a shrub with gas shears? Oh and if you agree to answer you must answer truthfully.

Most of the companies i worked at ( quite a few) either were run by a certified arborist or had one on staff. Not many of these companies operated professionally, safely, or anything. Not that I am putting down certified arborist but is that what you do when you become one? Charge 400.00 and hour? I could see it if you had a lot of people and equiment out on the job. But to run around and proclaim "i am ceritfied, I am the best there is, I want a million bucks to trimm that shrub" disgusts me. How about you?
Remember, no B.S., just answer the question or you STFU. I will stop when I am done or I get kicked out. I have to say beforehand that I have been kicked out of better places but this is by no means the worst. Good day to you Master Blaster.
